Got a 328i loaner today. Set it to sport and hit the freeway. Coming from a modified 335 and 135. Hit the gas and was like Damn, that is a nice ass power plant.

Depends on your take. Coming from E90 328's, the N20 is unfitting as it's not smooth, sounds like a diesel and is barely faster. Others find it to be quite a bit faster and give the car some balls that the base car never had and closed much of the gap of the N55. The truth lies somewhere in between lol.

Agreed. Traded my '08 335xi for a '13 328ix a month ago. This thing has very impressive power and torque, only a little less so than my '08. My wife had an '07 328xi, and here at altitude (Denver area) that engine struggled. The N20 is a different story altogether. No lag, and very quick. I drove the 335, for comparison, and the gap between the two is now much less. The feel of the steering is the biggest difference. Takes a bit to get used to the lighter feel. Even in sport mode. BUT, handling and precise feel is all 3! Not to mention the mileage difference...30 vs 24 with my 335/N54. I buy BMW's because of the way they drive, not because of the gadgetry or niceties you can get on lots of other cars.

Yeah my heart was all set on a 335 (having rented the E90 328 and 335s before), but after I test drove a 328 at the dealership I was sold. Now my wife complains of whiplash whenever I come out of a toll booth or merge onto a highway.

you guys dont feel a lag?
i feel like when i stomp on the pedal i have to wait until 2800ish rpm before power just comes rushing into the engine to me thats the only downside, i wish there is a tune or something that would fix that. for me i consistently lose to a N55 E90 if its just gas and go, but if we both torque brake at 2.5k rmp then launch i will always win. Also, when you brake torque race the N55 and you say you beat it, does it eventually come back and beat you after a while, or does your car out accelerate it for the whole time? |

You guys really need to get out and drive more cars if you are that impressed with the speed of a 328i. These aren't fast cars. Let's be realistic, here...they're barely quicker than a V6 Accord or Camry. The average car nowadays runs a low-14 at close to 100 MPH. Nothing to get all giddy about.
20 years ago, however...that was pretty darn quick. |

First of all, your car didn't dyno anything "at the crank," so that figure is meaningless. Almost as meaningless as 0-60 MPH. 5 seconds is nothing impressive.

270hp at the wheels and 320torque at the wheels. I was estimating at a bit over 10%. Which is pretty fair. And seriously? 5 seconds for BMW's LOWEST end car is not impressive? Mr. high standards...

My buddy drives a 13' V6 Accord, and he was impressed with the power and responsiveness of my car. And I'm stock. In addition I test drove a Caddi ATS Turbo sport and man if it wasn't so laggy in the lower RPM's that car would be a game changer.

Some people just feel smart stating the obvious. We all know the 328i is not the fastest car out there. Even the 335i is slow compared to plenty of others. The experience as a whole is great. I've received compliments from almost everyone that sees or rides in my car, and I love it. Most people don't believe me when I tell them it is a 4 cylinder. I find it very responsive and fun to drive. To each his own. I test drove both the 335 and the 328 and found the 328i--in the configuration I bought--to be the better deal.
Perhaps no one here should ever speak again about fast cars. I mean, its not like any of you own a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.... :/ |

BMW did a great job with the N20 engine. Very powerful for a 2L 4cyl turbo. I was turned off by the engine sound(s) so I went for a 335i instead. Much smoother and sounds waaay better.

I too came from e92 COBB tuned and was pleasantly surprised by power delivery and fuel economy combo. Still miss my N54 though.

Wait a few months...
I read an article in a Dutch car magazine that BMW will launch a Performance Power package for the BMW 428i at the end of this year in Europe, which will ad an extra 30 hp to the engine.
OK, not as much as the BMS tunes or whatsoever, but no problems with voiding your waranty on the engine. I was told by my dealer that this packege will also fit the 328i. Nice to know for all drivers that don't drive a lease car but own the car theirselves (like I do).....
