Clueless About Tires

Hey everyone, I need new tires and need some help...

All I know is:

-My size is 225/45/17

-I do NOT want run-flats

-My Price range per tire is $100-$125

-Looking for all season, decent tread life, decent/good performing, low profile.

Thanks in advance guys, I really do appreciate your help/opinions.

Thanks for the quick reply, you guys are awesome!

Also how do i know if they are low profile tires? The ones i have now seem pretty low pro. (Continental Extreme Contact RFT)

Both of the tires that I posted are the same size as your current tires. They should be roughly the same in terms of sidewall height.

I will also consider Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3, Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position, as well as Continental ExtremeContact DWS. Yes, all three cost a little bit more than the price range that you've asked for, but these tires should perform relatively better than the cheaper tire options. Good Luck and have fun with tire shopping!!

Lol, relatively better, or a lot better? Cause relative isn't gonna sell me on spending a lot more.

+1, both very good recommendations. If low road noise is a concern, I would a bit more towards the Kumho ECSTA 4X.

Thats a very subjective question. To me, I'll say those that i have named are a lot better lol!! They are designed to have more road handling and performance to begin with so they are closer to summer tires. Both the Michelin and the Bridgestone should feel much better in overall traction, communicating, and feel when compared with many competitors in the segment. The Continental is popular for its comfort as well as wet/winter capabilities for a high performance all season tire. Also at the end, it really depends on how you drive and where you drive as well. Good Luck and do lots of research!!

The Continental ExtremeContact DWS is one of the most popular tires that we sell with our wheels, and is considered to be one of the best all-seasons you can get for your money right now. It's definitely a solid choice.

So I think I am gonna go with a better option, after further research the Continental ExtremeContact DWS seems like a really good tire for the price. Its a bit more than i wanted to pay, but I realize tires can make a HUGE difference in driving performance and safety.

So thanks again for all the help guys! Yes you made me spend more, but i have a feeling it will be completely worth it!

I can't tell by your pics, but are those the stock sport package wheels? If they are then the rear tires will be 255/40/17. The 225/45/17 would only be on the front. Or maybe you're only buying fronts.

any opinions on Goodyear Eagle GT's? slightly cheaper than the Conti DWS... reviews seem to suggest that they would be a bit stiffer than the DWS (complaints that the DWS are too soft and worsen cornering feel...)

Ive had 3 sets of tires in 52K miles on my 335ix, and I can say that the Continental ExtremeContact DWS are the best tires Ive experienced on the BMW. When I put them on at 44K, it felt like a totally new car. Now I will qualify this statement, the previous two sets of tires were Run Flats, and Im certain that had a lot todo with the ride change.

I have the DWSs on my SUV - fantastic tire - and once the tires on my E90 are done, I'll be going with the DWSs for it, too... hands down the DWS is awesome.

These are fair. They do have good dry handling and steering response but otherwise would be a step down from the DWS.

Apparently some service ctrs have a "policy" of not allowing run flats to be swapped out for non-RF's... our local Firestone just told me they won't mount non-RF tires on wheels that have RF's on them... Whats up with this?

I know they won't mount used tires, although I talked them into doing it for me because they weren't that worn. So it wouldn't surprise me if they won't put on non RFTs. Probably a liability thing for them since we don't have a spare tire. I'm sure they don't want the customer to come back and say they didn't know they weren't RFTs when they get stranded on the side of the road with no spare. I had a used tire mounted at a Goodyear with no questions asked, so try there or any mom and pop place.

Are the Extreme Contact DW as good as the DWS? Because I don't really need the snow part of it.
