Speed Limit Read Out
I have been somewhat surprised how spot on the Speed Limit Read Out is, usually changing to the proper speed indication almost instantly after passing a speed limit sign that is higher/lower than the last.
However, last week in a downtown area where the speed limit is 25, I was in a parking lot. Came back to my car, pulled out and noticed the Speed Limit Read Out was showing 70 MPH. Now there is not a road with a 70 MPH Speed Limit within 20 miles of that location. Usually it just shows -- until I pass the first Speed Limit Sign. 2 Blocks down I turned onto another road and was scrambling to get my phone to take a picture and I passed a sign that showed Rt 60 at the next intersection with a left arrow. Immediately the Speed Limit dropped from 70 to 60 MPH (while still in the 25MPH zone). This is only time I have seen out of whack speed limit indications and have been meaning to go back and test it out again. But has anyone ever had an experience like this? This would not be good in a self-driving car! |

Interesting. I can't get the speed limit info to show up in my car. I have a 335 with the tech package... seems like it should be enabled... but the option doesn't appear in the settings menu as outlined in the manual. Anyone else have this problem?

LOL, true. I thought I had heard somewhere that this works by using the camera in the windshield (behind the rear view mirror) to read the signs and then update the speed limit in your navi. It must have mistaken the Rt 60 sign for a speed limit sign? Was there a Rt 70 nearby as well?
I could be COMPLETELY wrong about how the speed limit feature works. |

The camera is in the rear view mirror. I tried to order the tinted band windscreen with the speed limit display and was told that the grey band on the windscreen stops the camera working.

For 2013 Speed limit display is a separate option. Its part of the Driver Assistance Plus pkg.

BMW seems to be relying on the KFAS camera for speed limit display.
Other manufacturers use GPS data as well as a camera for this feature. I can tell you in a family members Caddy XTS speed limit display is usually accurate, but once in a while displays nothing or the wrong speed limit. Until we get a proper system to send this data to the vehicle, all these camera/GPS detection systems will be prone to some level of error. Maybe one day traffic signals or road signs will include directed low power RF signals to send this data to the car.

Make sure you have S8THA on your build sheet or verify it via your VIN.

I have the speed limit display and HUD, and have noticed that it displays the wrong info in one particular area after passing a large overhead road sign, roughly 25% of the time. In my case the speed limit is actually 45 but it changes to 65 as I pass under this sign. Interestingly, neither the numbers 45 nor 65 appear on the sign.

It was only when I stopped in a bank parking lot, turned off the car, then came out and re-entered that road (Again, it was only for 2 blocks) that it picked up the bad speed limit info. On the "60" MPH block, I did not stop and I drive on that street once a week without any bad readings. Its just very weird. |
