Cobb AP

I just pointed my friend who got an N54 335 to his first mod, a Cobb AP.

For $700, it is not a piggyback tune. Just plug it into your OBD port, select the map and go.

I would gladly pay the same for such a thing in place of a piggyback. I wonder how many of us it would take for Cobb to get moving on such a thing.

The N54 stuff has been out for awhile.

The N20 is still a bit new and unproven, but I think it will be as big if not bigger than the N54 as they are selling a lot of 328s and they have the potential the E90 328s never had.

I think if we rally the troops, get like 20 people and at least one person local to them to lend a car, they would take us very seriously.

I am.

I want to get a list of enough people and present it to Cobb. Then see if someone can provide a car if they need.

Companies don't make things for the fun of it, they need to know the market is there-large enough to make it financially viable.

i've seen people asked cobb on their forum page about n20s and they said most likely they will have stuff out for us but not any time soon. Plus they have to get by our DME somehow. I've been waiting to get protuned using cobb for awhile and wanting to see how it will go.

I sent them a more formal email.

I have decent luck with this.... weeks ago another vendor had a product discontinued for my E36/7 for years, organized a group buy and did a small production run. Sometimes you just need to present a good case to get them motivated

Sounds like a good idea, but no 3rd party has been able to crack the F30 DME. Not sure if it's really difficult that makes Dinan take so long, or if it's just their incompetence. But even if you get Cobb to agree, it would probably take 6 months+ before we see any product from them.

It always sounds impossible to crack until someone just ups and does it. I doubt the encryption is much different than the N55.

I am fine waiting 6 months compared to a Piggyback. I am not leasing my car, I have about 5 years with it.

I had COBB on my N54 e92. Loved it.

Pencil me in.

I'm totally in on that, I will trade my BMS tune in...in a heartbeat for the Cobb AP!! Cobb needs to hire a professional hacker to get the DME (ECU) cracked!!

OK, so this is Cobbs official response.

"Jameson,

We continue to look at adding support for the F30 328i but at this point, it's a pretty good distance down the project list. Unfortunately, we only have so many resources we can allocate to any one specific platform and BMW is one of the most labor intensive to add and maintain support for. Currently, the biggest projects are getting the N55 Accesstuner Race released, full E9X/E82 N55 support, and then the F30 335i support ready to go. However, the good news is we've already examined the N20 ECU and it's very similar to the F30 N55 setup so once we get into one, the other should be fairly easy. Best guess though- it'll be at least a year or more before we have any N20 support, if at all, but you never know. Priorities could change and we could get a few more engineers to get cracking on it, so there's a always a chance things could happen sooner.

Thanks for choosing COBB!

Thank you,
Jared"

About what I thought, the N55 is the big clincher, once they get that, the N20 will be simple. But the year + out, kinda stinks.

My thought is, when BMS nails down the JB4 and gets the electronic boost solenoid licked, I will go that route as a tide over for the year or so it will take for Cobb to get this done.

That's pretty disappointing news. With that said, it looks like 328i owners will be stuck at about 305whp/355wtq for a while (using BMS stg 2 on Map2 + a turboback). +/-15whp/15wtq would be a reasonable variance to assume based on dyno-to-dyno differences for anyone looking to get precise with things. If/when BMS gains control of the N26 boost solenoid, it would also be reasonable to assume an extra 10whp/10wtq can be achieved, considering how wildly the target boost and actual boost numbers are

Still though~300whp/350wtq is not thattttt bad. Now if only the car was sub 3000lbs!

Whats nice to know though is that we can drop some serious unsprung weight swapping to a light weight set of 18's or 19's with non-runflat tires (saving 60lbs or so seems to be the upper limit). If someone were to take it a bit farther and throw in a set of bucket seats...I would like to think another 80lbs could be removed!

I have no qualms with the numbers BMS currently has and will get down the road.

I like the means of setup for the Cobb and to see if power delivery is smoother as a tune vs a piggyback.

Basically, I am more than happy to throw a BMS piggback into the car again until Cobb has something worth switching to.

Right there with you. Once we have the ability to tune cam angles things will really start to get interesting...and once we can do that, I would LOVE to throw on a GT2871 or the equivalent Borg Warner EFR turbo w/ ex manifold. But considering this car is a lease, I'll be shooting for the M2 or the M235i or who knows what a few yrs from now

So is that what you are going to do - put it back in? Or did you end up selling your BMS? Don't you miss the extra horses & torques without boost?

I sold it a month or two ago.

I am holding out for stage 2 with electronic boost control.

I miss the power rarely, I have been driving the hell out of the E36/7. But it will be in the shop for a week starting Thursday for machine work. So I will be driving the F30 enough to miss the power.
