OT: Mobile phone question

On the display of my mobile phone (Samsung U600), next to the signal strength indicator there is a blue square that normally has the letter G inside it. I don't know what this means. However, when I'm at work, it shows a blue square with an E inside it. It has only started showing the E recently. Can anyone shed any light as to what exactly this means please?

Thanks guys.

Edge/GPRS? Internet connectivity on your phone.

OR

As some might say to Carlos occasionally......

I have the same phone. The G displays after I have sent a picture message or connected to the t'internet. It goes away when you turn off the phone. Never seen the E symbol.

Try...

OT: How do you find the signal strength? Mine's pretty poor. Also, do you find that you are prone to brushing the touch sensitive keys and dialling someone by mistake? Did this the other night and woke me mate up. He wasn't best pleased!!

Thanks guys!!!

RockIt - I have occasionally started dialing someone accidentally, and have to keep remembering to shut the phone to cancel it quickly!!! I pretty much tend to always have full signal strength (5 bars) - both at work and home. I'm on O2 and our building at work is dreadful internally for mobile phones, but mine is always pretty good.

Silver - can you explain differences between E and G please???

Z4 - I don't know enough about the technicalities, but I do know that EDGE is faster than GPRS (so E is better than G). I believe you won't be able to get Edge everywhere hence the switch from E to G.

See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhance..._GSM_Evolution

I believe that the iPhone when it comes out utilises Edge and it also seems that o2 is one of the only networks that provide it - I may be wrong on that last point but I believe that's the case.

Thanks for info Silver - that makes me feel good, knowing that I am on a superior network from the common G people (when I'm at work anyway)

I wish I hadn't upgraded my handset a couple of months ago, and then I could have thought about an Iphone next month

I've tried to train myself to delete recent calls, as it's this soft key that triggers the dialling. Ended up phoning all sorts of people by mistake when I first got the phone.
