Adaptive xenons vs Lighting PKG w/adaptive LEDs

If you don't want automatic high beams is there much of an advantage to getting the lighting package. It seems like the standard adaptive xenons will look pretty cool with their led halos and will work very well.

Am I missing something?

I dont think automatic high beams have anything to do with LED lights
I have them on X6M with xenons
Most modern BMWs with xenon lights have automatic highbeam option

For the US the lighting package has automatic highbeams AND adaptive LED headlights.

I am new at this with my first pre order. The lighting pkg is not very full of information anywhere. I believe in the US that you get both the auto high beams and the leds. I think the leds are pretty cool and the look of the next 5 yrs or so. That being said, i thinknyou are right that the bixenons will still look good. I am in the same boat. Dont need auto hi bea,s so i passed on this $1900 option even though i want the leds for cool factor. Have to draw a line somewhere

My understanding is that the X5 with xenons and the x5 with led headlights BOTH get the led rings or halos and thus look very similarly. The difference is that it is standard for there to be xenons within the led halos versus the option to have the leds there providing the actual main lighting. Both do the adaptive lighting which follows corners as you drive.

Unless someone corrects me I also understand that because of federal regulations we do NOT get the awesome automatic highbeams that the rest of the world gets where the car does constant light sampling to both avoid blinding oncoming cars but yet still give a really extended lighting.

There are youtube videos that show how this works. The one below is the BMW version:

If that was available then I would get the lighting package.

In Canada it seems that we similarly receive the same, being code 5AC ( automatic high beams/ high beam assist). However, the 5AP- Decoding for high beam assistance is part of the $3800 ZXP Technology package: 552, 5A1, 5AC, 5AG, 5AL, 5AP, 5AS. $1900 ACC with Stop & Go (option 5AT) is available with ZXP. I got them both as I wanted some but not all the features. You are right in the US $1900 for ZLP Lighting Pkg for only 552 and 5AC is debatable. Perhaps, with 552 comes with the interior tri-color LED lighting.

Audi like BMW non blindling headlights not available in US.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-1...ales-race.html

The system, called Matrix LED, was introduced in Germany in mid-November as a 2,400-euro ($3,200) option on the 74,500-euro A8 executive sedan. (The feature hasn’t been approved yet for the U.S.) BMW charges 2,500 euros for an LED lighting package, which can’t create non-blinding gaps for specific vehicles.

LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, have replaced Xenon, which was first introduced by BMW in the 1990s, as the hot, new lighting technology for high-end carmakers

LED technology uses less energy and lasts longer than traditional halogen bulbs, which have been the industry standard for decades.

I don't think the standard Xenons have that 3d glass look like the LEDs do. There are no colored bulbs that are visible when off. I too, love the LEDs.

I posted this in another Thread...related to this topic:

Well I just happened to be by the dealer yesterday afternoon and checked out a CB, MSport 35i w/out the LED package. Sure enough, the front parking lights (orange) were in fact LED, as were the rear back up lights, and according to my CA, the rear brake lights are LED, but you cannot tell b/c the red plastic covering isn't transparent, more muted. I prefer the LED look like in the 5er or my E92 335is rear brake lights with the individual LED diodes can be seen through the plastic. It appears the only candescent light is the ugly front orange turn signal bulb.

Now do I go back on what I said earlier about having to purchase the LED package if the rest of the vehicle was LED...still not sold

The LED headlights are quite interesting looking when lit up. With xenons, the light is a full circle emitting from the headlamp, whereas the LED will have only the upper half lit at night (for low beams) so it gives a very distinct look...one I have not seen on any other vehicle yet.

I believe there is a lot of technology on the BMW LED headlights. Overall I really like the way BMW handled all lights in the new BMW. LEDs are used everywhere in the car and lights look very modern and classy without having those little LED squares that you see in other cars. Those look ugly and cheap looking in my opinion.
