Warning light came on, couldn't drive car

Hi guys, this light just came on my car and was yellow then turned red, and my car kinda stopped going and could only move around 20km/h until I managed to pull over to the side. Looked online and it says something about engine coolant temperature? Any ideas of what it is or how to fix? Still currently pulled over so probably going to get it towed back

Water pump failed most likely. Do not drive anymore, get it towed. And turn the car off.

Is this a part that just commonly breaks down in our cars? Or is it due to some other reasons? Didn't think it'd go until after more km's

Ayy! Welcome welcome. Don't drive it. Call a flat bed over and roll it up and take it somewhere. Your water pump is dead same happened to me. $500 for a water pump and the labor varies. Sorry man

Looks like he has just over 50,000km, so should still be under warranty.

You probably want to check for leaks around your oil filter housing too. That gasket deteriorating can sometimes send gasket material through your water pump.

Let me put this way, the same company who made bad HPFP which gave us all sort of problems made the water pump. The replacement pump is made by Continental.

The cost is around $500 to $1200 depending on you doing it yourself of having the Dealer doing it for you. If you do it yourself it is recommended that the thermostat assembly also be replace. They went from a sealed Aluminum design to a plastic design which allows you to take it apart and replace the just the thermostat.

When I replaced mine I dissemble (destroyed) the old pump to see what went bad. It is designed to use the engine coolant to also cool the water pump, so water circulated through it. There is electronic inside and the water circulates around the stator with, and stator is sealed in plastic. I my case the plastic around the stator was cracked so water obviously got inside of it.

Seems like water pumps go bad more often on 335's based on my experience in this forum. I wonder if its the same kind of water pumps between 335, 330i and 328s. Based on pricing seems like they are not.

This happened to me but it wasnt the water pump. My radiator had developed a crack and coolant was literally pouring out of the car. I was the highway and it happened. I pulled over and called a tow truck. My ext. warranty hadn't kicked in yet so i spent about $460 total to repair.

I did a lot of research on this a while back and from what I can recall, N52s and N54/N55 engines have different part numbers for water pumps. As for the differences, I have no idea. Both pumps have been through a part number revision or two and I don't know what they changed between revisions. I didn't dig that deeply.

I always thought that the 335 had a higher powered water pump, however I could be confusing that with another part. I know it has the HPFP, just not sure if it has a more powerful water pump.

Hi guys, my mechanic did a check and scan on the water pump but he said it didnt show any problem with it , unlike previous 335i's he worked on where it was able to scan a problem, so he was asking if he should go along and order the parts to fix. In addition, does the thermostat have to replaced along with it together?

did yellow symbol came up before the red one?
does the symbol state engine is over heated?
do you get the symbol again after you drive again after the car is cooled down?
if you say Yes to all 3, yes its water pump.
Its most likey common to change thermostat along since they are at the same location. If you are paying for the labour, might as well get new thermostat.
