N13 1598cc 100kW engine tuning

Hi guys,

I drive 316i f30 2012. Recently the same engine is being sold as 320i ED and the horsepower capacity is increased by 25% via software I guess.

Any of you familiar with engine tuning? May I code my ecu to act as a 320i ED? Same engine same hardware same gearbox

The engine is very similar, but the camshafts in the 316i are different. Both inlet and outlet cams. They allow the car to reach the peak hp at 4400 rpm already and torque starting 1250 rpm up to 5000 rpm. In the 320i ED peak hp starts at 4800-6450 and torque 1500-5000 rpm.

racechip and other companies make plug in tuning kits giving the 316i decent power. There are youtube video's of the racehip ultimate in 316i, mostly from Turkey as well. I just wonder how reliable those tuning boxes are. The engine should cope with it fine. The engine is basicly the N18 mini cooper S engine, so buying hardware upgrades for Mini cooper S N18 should work, I think. (alta blow off valve spring, turbo upgrades) and look into the bastuck downpipe back exhaust. It deals with the small diameter exhaust as the 316i and 320i ED have the same 63,5 mm downpipe diameter, but on the 316i, 320i ED and 320i the front connecting pipe is about 60 mm, mid pipe on the 316i and 320i ED 52,5 mm, 320i 60 mm and on the 328i it's full bore 76 mm front to back. Bastuck replaces the small diameter piping with 76 mm. The exhaust systems are all the same for the 4 cyl F30, but include a large bore front connecting pipe for the N13 versions.

BMS makes the most popular MINI N18 tune. It's possible the same tune will carry over to all of the BMW 1.6l gasoline engines. But since those cars are not in the USA BMS has not done much testing with them.

Interesting,
And then there's Steinbauer who supplies the tuning kits to AC-Schnitzer.
Are the tuning kits different for the Mini , BMW 1-series F20 and F30 3-series?

At least for the N18 MINI it's a different product than the N20 2L products. If you email BMS photos of your engine bay maybe they will send you a free tune to test out and verify everything works as it should be.

I e-mailed the folks at BMS asking if the Mini JB+ would work on the n13 (I own an 118i) and they said they are working on it! Let's see what they come up with!

I also have 316i (A). I still have the BPS warranty ongoing but after that I am planning to remap my car. I was asking from one quite reliable place and they stated that after remap hp will be 200 to 210 and maximum safe torque out of automatic transmission is 330-340Nm. To my understanding the turbo is the limiting element so thats why everyone is telling about the same numbers.
