Driving Shoes

So I've been putting it off for a while, but the gazelle's are running a little too wide for my increased brake pedal travel. It's also been pointed out by many that my modulation is a little ummm..less than ideal. A little more feedback probably wouldn't hurt.

So, experiences, tips, etc? Unfortunately there aren't any race shops around here, so I may have to roll the dice on sizing. I have wide feet and a high arch. I don't really care about style/color. Spray paint can fix that!

And yes, you are in fact seeing a person asking for shoe advice on a car forum

I don't use driving shoes during HPDE, but I do run a pair when driving the LeMons car. Personally, and this is a taste issue as opposed to a right/wrong issue, I do not prefer driving shoes. I find that in my DD 328i, my laps are cleaner when I drive in the same shoes I usually drive in, as my feet are acclimated to the feedback through those.

Having said all that, I would find an online retailer like Amazon with a decent selection and liberal return policies and try a bunch of different pairs. Fit is a very personal decision. Just know that the really inexpensive shoes can be stiff and somewhat uncomfortable, but the expensive ones can be very expensive for the amount of wear they will get.

Not a fan of driving shoes...but you'll find what you're looking for at any sporting goods store. Wrestling shoes are practically identical.

I actually use driving shoes when cycling and always used them on the track before but I can see Mocohead's point and thinking for HPDE I should probably wear daily worn shoes.

I actually bought these on my drive back from Monterey that have the 'driver's' heel and are really comfortable and light for leather uppers

Unless you are looking for fire retardant shoes, any narrower shoe would work.

I personally wear chuck taylors

Ive seen others drive in pumas and driving loafers, as well as your sparcos, etc.

Well most my time driving is spent in dress shoes. Wouldn't that be funny if I showed up in dress shoes and shorts lol. I'm gonna give Dicks a shot. No puma outlets nearby. I'm not sure I'm cool enough to pull off chuck taylors

I ended up picking up some Addidas super extreme hyperfluxed max performance v4.0 wrestling shoes. I was disappointed they didn't have glow in the dark hot pink (seems all other athletics shoes have it), so I ended up with black/black. They are actually really comfortable, have mesh venting, and supportive. You know..like a jock strap for the feet

I have a couple of pairs of pumas, fast cat I believe. Got them from zappos, free return in they don't fit.

Tried with my normal shoes but the lip around the sole of my sketchers gets caught between the pedals just often enough to be a problem. If it happens once in a run, the run is shot

i ran oakley race low for a long time. they hold up great, fire retardant and are wider than most. they are also quite comfortable. these shoes are still in great shape after soaking wet autoX days and lots of walking and use. oakley offers a higher top shoe and then more of a boot style.

i also use puma drift cat 4. they are narrower but a bit harder than the oakley race low shoe.

Oh man those are nice. I'm kinda liking the high top. I'm finding the ankle top is providing some good resistance on the accelerator side. We'll see if it's a limiting factor on Friday. Rain is the downside as it will probably seep through the mesh.

However, I got the thumb up from the boss...
