Question M3/M4 technical specs questions?

We'll be sharing the first technical specs of the F80 M3 / F82 M4 soon (within a week), but we'll also have an opportunity to pose some questions to BMW M. There's no guarantee we'll get answers to any of our questions, but it doesn't hurt to try.

With that said, feel free to suggest questions for us to ask. I'll start with some obvious ones.

- inline or V6? (no, we're not actually going to ask this because it will be inline).
- how many horsepowers / torque?
- how many turbochargers and what type?
- DCT and manual transmission for all markets?
- electric or hydraulic power steering?
- redline RPM?
- what do the cars weigh?
- weight difference between the M3 and M4?

Thumbs up

Great thread, Jason. Thanks for posting.

Please ask:

if the M3 will be as driver focused as the M4
if the CF roof will definitely be standard on the M3
if any future power pack option is able to be retrofitted
what the available wheel sizes will be on the M3 (hopefully 18 and 19)
is the power steering a unique calibration for the M3 and M4 (i'm assuming it is)

I'd be very curious to know if their philosophy for the development of the M3/M4 was appreciably different than that of the M5/M6.

Technically speaking though, I'd like to know how substantial the weight savings are through equipment that's not standard.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Where were the weight reduction achieved?
What car components or systems were modifed compared to the F3X to achieve the weight reduction?
Will all the weight savings component be satandard or will some be optional? If so, which ones?
Will a performance exhaust option be offered at launch?

Thanks for starting this thread Jason. It looks like you and everyone before my post summed up all of the possible questions. Thanks again and the countdown begins. For me, I am dying to hear more about the engine in particular. The E92 V8 is such a gem, it will be interesting how the S55 will compare.

Will there be a performance package like the M5, if so, how much extra hp will it have?
Will there be an overboost function like in the 1M, if so, how much extra torque will it have?
Will it have Active Sound Design, if so, can I turn it off?

Will there be a passive (non-edc) suspension option?
Will there still be a unique M cloth standard seat option?
Will the car be offered in unique and bright colors akin to the E46 M3?

Does the power dome have a function or is it purely aesthetically motivated?

Does the turbo's have any sort of electrical assist and/or do they regenerate power?
If yes to regeneration; Does the car have some sort of KERS power boost?

Does the engine's powerband/characteristics favour high end gear shifts or mid range torque bursts? Or both?

How much faster than the E9X is it around the Nürburgring?

Would BMW M consider it a spiritual successor to the E46 M3 more than the E9X M3?

How would they describe the engine/exhaust noise audible from inside the car (what would they compare it with)?

Will the hp/trq outputs differ from NA markets to Europe?

Do they plan a Club Sport version (that is affordable)?

Could you please ask, whether they use active/dynamic engine mounting?
Or in case not, whether they have taken it into account?
Note: Porsche is using this on its GT3s ....

Why? The e9x M3 LCI and M5 LCI models didn't get a power bump.

Instead I wouldn't be surprised to see a competition package with power bump like the M5/M6 got.

Didn't the M5 LCI and competition package happen together?

Yes. But it sounds like you were talking about a standard power bump for all LCI models (instead of coming in the form of a competition package.

You cannot go to a pre launch and ask about the mid-life refresh even before the car has been launched on the market or actually launched for that matter.

As in history? More likely with competition pack and further progressive variant?
The M5 and M6 did not receive any power increase except for the Competition packet.

Please remember that they will want to keep some info hidden until launch.
The competition must continue to be taunted until the unveiling.

the power bump will mostly come from slightly freer flow on exhaust and super conservative tune.. by that time there will be plenty quality tUners available for bigger power boost.. at fraction of cost for competition pack..
