Push Start Button w/optional "anti-theft"

THANKS TO E46FANATICS!

before i begin, I will say, it's not pretty. I am the first one to fit the Altima push start button in and it was bigger than I thought or the Cig lighter area was smaller than E46 where I got the idea from. so I had to dremel out a whole bunch and relocated the Cig to the opening for "pass airbag on" light which is useless and I use Cig lighter to charge stuff more.

Anyway, this was my install and you can do it with ANY OTHER BUTTON out there as long as you use a proper relay and wiring(18gauges was recommended) S2000 is a popular one, Z8, Altima/Infiniti buttons... I liked the Altima because it lights up...kinda cool and feels better than S2000, which I had experience with before.

ALL you have to do is follow the DIY(IDENTICAL FOR Z4's) below for S2000, but for wiring on Altima button, it is also listed below.
***THE PICTURE BELOW SHOWS ALL PINS CONECTED. This is if you want to have LOCK/ACC/ON LED's on continuously. I chose to only light up ON LED...aka, I did not ground LOCK or ACC pin****
http://members.shaw.ca/banana_bread/...nestartdiy.htm

and some of my pix and vids

part number(about $36 shipped from HerbGordon Nissan in MD)

what it looks like at night, I DID NOT connect Lock and Acc LED's because it would look stupid when the car is on, to have LOCK and ACC light on.

In the Ash Tray

OPTIONAL
This is optional. I cut the starter wire coming out of the ignition(blue/black)
so the car can not be started using the key. Must put the key in ignition to ON position and press the button to start. Just prevents someone to take off in ur car "just incase" some may say it's not gonna work..yea they can always steal the car but it's just nice to have.

I love the idea! Is there a way to make it work w/o using the key at all? Perhaps use some kind of RFID to activate the push start?

good form, good execution, good idea but i personally would not want it done to my car.

the original purpose of push button start is for race cars because they have no key. all u do is hop in and push to start. now a days its bastardized a la honda s2000 etc where you have to stick a key in and push the start button.

This reminds me of that stupid button on some cars, inwhich you have to push inorder to remove the key from the ignition. The most recent car ive seen with this is a 2004 dodge neon. please explain to me why its needed You first turn off the ignition, push the little button, then remove the key from the ignition.

the only way i will accept this button is in something like the lexus system. here you have a key fob that you keep in your pocket/purse. to open doors all you do is lift on the handle and to start you push the button with foot on brake. to me this is the REAL keyless entry.

but if you like it congratulations on a job well done. im not here to tell you all what you can and cant do with your cars. i believe in individualism and whatever floats your boat.

Does anyone know if the S2000 button is smaller than this one? I want something that would fit nicely in the cig lighter hole.

I think it's kind of a wierd place to put it, but good job on the DIY nonetheless.

Nice work! Not sure if it's possible, but i think it would be cool to somehow integrate the start button by pushing on the radio knob. Probably would require alot of wiring, relays, and not to mention possibly losing functionality of the knob itself, but just a thought.

I'm not sure where I'd put it, cuz I'm not sure there is a good spot. But I think the best place would be on the dash near the key or someplace easily reached after you turn the key. Probably would require some plastic surgery that i'm sure most people would be uncomfortable performing on their car.

So like I said, good job nonetheless.

Yeah, I don't see a good way to not use a key since it has to be in the "on" position for the button to work. I like how the button can be hidden by closing the change drawer though.

Would 14/16 gauge wires for the relay cause a problem? Those I found on ebay are all 14/16!

I did go to Radioshack but they sell the parts separately vs. ebay's nice and ready bundles like this:

Isn't the pre-wired one just the relay+ wires attached to it? How is it different? Sorry for the potentially noob Q
