H&R Sport + Bilstein B8
I pulled the trigger and set up an appointment to install H&R Sport Springs with the matching Bilstein B8 Shocks. I'm really excited to see the results but I'm wondering if anyone has installed the same set up. Seems like everyone is skipping on the shocks.
I went with the Sport springs because this is a daily driver car I didn't want to go lower than 30mm drop. I'm hoping the B8 Shocks will help stiffen up the far to compliant damping and body roll. My F30 is a sport model and I can't say how disappointed I've been in the handling. I came from a sport suspension setup on an 03' E46. BMW had it right back then, that car was planted, and you knew it had sport suspension. Now after 25k miles I need new tires, so I thought it would be a good time to get the suspension this car deserves. Anyone have the Sport Spring + B8 Combo? |

Yes, somebody did the same/similar upgrade and was extremely satisfied. That member went with the rear shocks only. I'm following suit with the rear shocks as well. They are $264 shipped to your door from ProAmAuto. The rear of this car is just soft and spongy and I am not satisfied. How much are you paying for the front/rear shocks?

Thanks for the link! I'm paying $800 for the shocks and $250 for the springs including install. Probably too much, but its very nice shop I've used before and they do excellent work.
Why only go with the rear? The stock sport shocks aren't designed for the limited travel of the lowering springs. That being said, I'm coming from a lighter front end on the 328, maybe the 335 feels a little stiffer up front. Looking forward to feeling the new set up! Can't wait for the parts to come in! |

Well, $1050 for parts and labor isn't bad actually. $250 is average cost for the springs (..and I paid $250 to have them installed at EAS). Subtract $250 labor from that $1050, and you're left with $800 for parts (..$250 for the springs and $550 for all 4 shocks......and I'm paying $264 shipped for two rear shocks). I think the price you're paying is fair. The 335i feels pretty good up front actually, which is why I agree with pkancel's assessment to just do the rear shocks.......at least for now. I'm trying not to get too ball's deep into modifying this 335i because I know its days are numbered. I made that mistake with my 2013 X5 only to sell it less than 5 months after purchasing it (..and dumping over $5k in modifications/custom work during that time), and then having to sell all of the parts. My 335i is nearing completion. |

Hi! I will be going for the exact same setup as you and have the parts ordered on the way. Should be able to install next week.
Just to check the part numbers if they are correct: Bilstein B8 Shocks/Struts: 35-217862 X 2 and 24-217873 X 2 H&R Sport Springs (Dark Blue): 28878-2 When will you be installing yours? I enquired about the light blue dust shield covers that come with the B14 and B16 coilover kits for use with my B8 shocks/struts, but the indent time is too long. Will you be using any other dust shield covers for your shocks/struts? |

Yep! The part numbers match, front - 35-217862 and rear - 24-217873. I have no idea what color the HR Springs are, I didn't even know they offered colors other than red.
I am not going with an special dust covers, just what comes in the box. Which now you have me wondering if the Yellow shock is going to be visible through the wheel? That won't be cool! We will be installing as soon as the part ships to us. It's been a few days now and we don't have a shipping confirmation, so I'm starting to get annoyed with the part supplier. Also decided to get some Caliper Covers for the brakes from MGP. I'm quite satisfied with the brakes that come on the Sport model and if I needed more bite I'd probably just go with better pads. Oh... And I got 15mm spacers for the rear wheels. Going to wait on spacing the front after having a look when it's lowered. |

The BILSTEIN B6 Sport is a mono-tube gas pressure shock absorber designed to dampen wide-ranging vibrations very precisely. Where an oil shock absorber produces an oily foam and creates a spongy driving feeling after a very short distance, the BILSTEIN B6 Sport remains constant, precise and stable. The BILSTEIN B8 Sprint is a mono-tube gas pressure shock absorber specifically designed to be used with lowered vehicles with shorter stroke. It also offers the same advantages as the BILSTEIN B6 Sport shock absorber. |

Finally got the Bilstein B8 and H&R Sport Springs installed!
Took photos of the installation process and the installed product, but forgotten to take pics of the car after installation, how convenient... Anyway, will take photos of the drop after the springs have settled in to their final compression. One installation note is that I totally removed the bumpstop on the front shocks as they just could not fit in. So far, no bottoming-out problem under hard cornering or bumps. I am always a believer of changing your shocks/struts if you are going for lowering springs. Body-roll is almost totally eliminated (probably just need to wait for the front and rear swaybars from Eibach to be released). This is coming from a normal standard (non M-Sport suspension) suspension setup on a 328i. |

Bilstein's B8's just seem to work so perfectly with the H&R Sports. I swear they must develop them side by side. |
