Plastic pieces peeling yet again!!

just thought I would share...

The driver door handle, steering wheel and front passenger handles are peeling.
it's the second time that the driver door handle and steering wheel do this...

I'm going to ask the dealership to replace the steering wheel piece with the 2007 piece which has the silver trim. I'm sure it's no coincidence that BMW put a metal trim exactly where the plastic is peeling. It peeled in the same place the last time... I can't find the price of the 2007 piece on realoem. any one have it?

the part number for the 2006 piece is 32306767211
The part number for the 2007 piece is 32306776646

Here are a few pictures of the trim...

My Driver door handle is peeling as well. I have a service coming up and I'm going to ask them to repace it. Keep us posted.

Well they did replace them the first time around under warranty.
the funny thing is to replace the driver door handle, they had to replace the entire interior door panel.

I just think it's sad that it's the same parts peeling a second time around. They better have fixed this issue almost 3 years later!

My parents A4 had this peeling issue. Their solution was to get rid of the car! lol

Had same prob w/ my 1999.5 Jetta. I've scratched off some of the plastic film on my drive side handle.

I HATE it when they make these cheapo plastic handles w/veneer.

On the drivers door handle and steering wheel cover it looks like they spray painted the finish on. I don't understand why they would do that to plastic when you can make plastic any color under the sun and have it be the same color all the way through the piece.

BMW should still replace these pieces as they should be resistant to hand lotion or other commonly used products. The tech working on my girlfriends MB said hand lotion, anti-bacteria hand gel and gasoline seem to be the biggest offenders causing the paint on plastic interior pieces to rub off or separate from the plastic and flake off.

Can they not make quality plastic to be resistant to hand lotion and sun screen or is bmw just not wanting to pay for it!?

Its not a problem limited to BMW. Many other brands have similar problems. BMW is very eco-friendly in their paint process that leads some to complain about the exterior paints (search for threads). Its my guess the interior parts follow the same standards as the exterior paint. Environmentally safe paints and the eco-friendly coating process cause the interior paint to not hold as well to plastic. Just a guess

I have the same problem on my e90. The SA at Kelly BMW in Columbus, Ohio told me last week that BMW will replace it only once.
