How does the trunk open?

Don't the tail lights get in the way?

I can't visualize it -- the trunk opening between the tail lights are narrow and the lid closest to the bumper is much wider.

It opens like a cabrio.

I'm sure it swings out just enough to clear...

Obviously, it's just swings out.

If you look at the trunk & taillights of the Scion FR-S, you see a somewhat similar situation. If the trunk went straight up (90 degrees), the shape of the taillights (like on the 2-series) would indeed interfere with it opening.

However, it doesn't open straight up. It swings open and closed on an axis. Here's a (silly) video that features the Scion's trunk.

Got it, thanks.

I saw that picture earlier in the week, but it didn't click until you explained it.

Was hoping it didn't have a tiny little clearance from the top only, like a Miata.

The video is helpful too.

Now, only thing left to wonder about is the steering...

You have to remove the tail lights every time you want to open the trunk.

Yah.
The underside of lip of the lid just above the license plate has a rubber oval "button" (just like on my 1-series and X1). Press that and the lid pops open.
