New BMW Factory Oil Guage?

I was in a E92 coupe that had an oil guage that read 100 - 300 degrees with 200 in the center. Mine (E90) reads 160 - 340 with 250 in the center. What is up with that? Did BMW change it for the coupes or was this an early guage and they changed it for build dates after March of '07? What did the E90 330's use in 2006? Maybe they had some left over guages and stuck it in this car. I would not want to see my needle riding within a few ticks of max. Anyone else have this guage on their E9x cars?

Yes, my first 335 was a Feb '07 build and it had the gauge you describe. I think March '07 production cars and later started coming with the 160-250-340 gauge.

Garage List
The 330's didn't have a temp guage. We have a Mpg guage, here is a pic its a little old bit you can see part of it.

My June production coupe has a gauge that stops at 340 with 250 in the middle.

+1 (I can't confirm the specific month, but they did make the change. Most folks theory is the original gauge freaked owners out because typical op temperature wasn't near the middle)

I bet BMW had the guage ordered for production prior to complete engine testing. All manufacturers try to get their guages to read in the center for normal. BMW probably anticipated the oil temps to run between 190 - 210. My oil temps run consistantly in town at 240 - 245 degrees. If I stay in second gear under 45mph during my commute on traffic light streets, the temps go to 250.

I hope you're wrong. If BMW missed it's op temperature estimates by that much I am frightened of the future for my engine.

Yeah I sure hope so too. I think BMW just misjudged owner reaction to seeing anything but middle of the dial. In all of BMW’s testing I’m sure they have this engine running at the targeted oil temp during normal driving. However, it’s apparent BMW missed the boat in the cooling department when it comes to extended aggressive driving such as track work.

I know some people have had problems with cooling on the track. My car has been fine on the track so far.
