Red face The Missing Link between 2-Series and E36

I used to own an e36 sedan back in college and I loved it. I was surprised to learn that the m235i is about the same size, because it somehow looks stubbier than the e36 in photos and videos. The great 2GC renders posted here earlier felt disconnected, I had no sense of size

So I went into photoshop with the goal of comparing them, but it wasn't until I decided to simply draw on a second set of doors that it clicked for me. I don't know if anyone else will find this interesting, but it was amazing how much it changed with back doors. It now looks longer and sleeker.

Please excuse my terrible photoshop work, I literally just used the paint brush tool and painted doors in, and then tried my best to shift the B-pillar. Roof line is 100% unchanged.

And here is the original comparison I made. It was a slow work day for me:

This makes me excited for the idea of a 2GC, or an M2GC in the future.

Very good photoshop!

That being said, I don't think the production version will have a door shut line like that of your render. I just don't see BMW doing that. I think it would be straighter like in the E46 and F30. Nor do I think that BMW will extend the top of the door past the window.

Great work.
You've nailed why the 2 series coupe will be such a big hit - it's reminiscent of the sporty/compact BMW we grew to love in the 80s and 90s. The proportions look amazingly similar.

E36 looks better. How is it nobody all the dimensions of cars' growth. It is not only in length they grow, but also in height, that is something I hate even more. The 2 Series is just too high. E36 was so much lower. So stupid, cars get higher, and tuners drop them.

I wouldn't like to be the rear seat passenger of such a 2GC, though.

it looks almost nothing like the E36...it looks more like a shrunk F30.

Totally agree. Even E82 could look more like E36, but F22 is completely different.

The images are to compare their sizes. I had a hard time imaging the 2-series as an e36 sized coupe/sedan before comparing them in photoshop.

They are obviously different cars that look nothing a like, but the 2 is a modern version of an e36.

Who the hell would want to buy it if it looked like the E36? I don't understand the comment since the picture was about size. You want to buy a car that the body was designed 20 years ago?

Sizewise, you may be right. the E82 is/was shorter than the E36 and even the E30....in fact it's length was closer to the E21. In that respect you are right as the F22 has grown quite a bit longer and is of similar length to the E36. Styling wise, the E82 was much closer to the older BMWs than the F22 is. Stylistically the F22 takes a lot of continuation from the E82, but modernizes it all with lots of F30/F32 thrown in there.

It is not only about length, it is about hight. New cars are all too high. Nissan Silvia for example was almost as low as now a Ferrari 458. E36 Coupé was almost as low as current Z4. That is the problem, cars are too high, and 2 Series is too high, higher than 4 Series, a real shame.

It is not the perfect scenario for the f22 but you end up with decent head room on the second row seat which is pretty rare for coupe car of that size.
