123D Review

The Times has a review of the 123D coupe today. What's interesting is although he doesn't like the car that much, he loved the engine.

Has raised a good point, when will the new engine make it to the 3 series? Anyone know, suspect or want to take a guess?

The low emissions and stunning economy are maybe more important to prospective customers than BHP, Carl.

The engine sounds a beaut. In the 1 coupe looks like a winner. Hard to fault ...

If they put it in the 3, they`d need to drop the 325d which being a 6 pot is always going to be more refined.

I would think it would appear in the three series, probably in the 2009 model year face lift range. Other manufacturers are offering diesels with good performance now and BMW will not want to lose their advantage.

That's what I would expect to happen. With the EU thinking of mandating an average CO2 of 130, makers like BMW who have plenty of big cars with big engines need to make some changes. Making the most popular models low emissions means they can keep selling high-margin, big engined cars.

Yeah, I'm sure I've read that its due to be shown in March. It would make sense to change the 325D to a 323D at that point (although they could keep the name the same and just change the engine).

The E90 facelift, not E92 or E93. I suspect it to come september 08, the E90 would then have been offered for 3,5 years. Perfect for half life face lift.

I saw a 635d in the dealers yesterday ...

My prediction is that all BMW diesels will eventually have a sequential turbo option.

My son quite fancies one (although it would be a 120d for price and insurance reasons) so we are planning a test drive when our dealer has them. I hope it's the twin turbo though.

Wink Women are strange!

I caught a shot of a 123d this afternoon on my mobile, whilst Mrs Viv was driving.

I don't think it looks too bad & asked the wife if she'd like one.
'That knob on the gearstick's just too close to the dashboard, for me', she said.
'Fair enough', I thought.

Anybody know why there is no 123d Coupe auto? It's only available as a manual. I'm just curious, since it's the opposite to the 335d which is only available as auto...

I think you'll find the 123d doesn't have the same sort of torque as the 335d.

From what I understand the 335d can't be mated to a normal manual.
So that's why you have to have an auto box.

That's a bit harsh! Of course we really can't tell what he looks like from the shot you took Viv.
