Custom upgraded stage 2 turbos?
I've been giving it a lot of thought lately, and there is a shop in my region, that does custom upgrades of turbos. I have a pair of oem turbos that I bought from the black market here long ago, but my oem turbos never failed (112K tuned track/street miles). I'm wondering the pros and cons of giving them to this shop, to machine, and upgrade, vs buying already made stage 2 turbos from vendors. I'm certain parts/labor should be around $1,000-1,500 max. Any thoughts?

I've been going the custom route lately, and it's been a good experience, so why not turbos? With stage 1 & 2, all your doing is machining existing hardware, and upgrading wheels, wastegates, etc., right?

Due to the turbos design it is A LOT more difficult to do to than most people think. It is much more involved than it is on other platforms and since you would be shouldering the cost on your own it will become VERY expensive very quickly. There is a reason that companies liked Forced Performance declined to enter the N54 hybrid turbo market.

Hardware wise a custom single turbo isn't a huge undertaking, when it comes to a kit well enough designed(and built) to market as a ready to run setup is another story. We sell Vargas turbocharger kits and will be making some big announcements about our single turbo kit in the near future. |
