coupes longer than sedans?

Just saw a press release thing about the new M3/M4's and saw the coupe's are actually longer than the sedans.

If I remember correctly, the e90/e92s are also like this... with the coupe being slightly longer.

Doesn't anything else find that odd? the "same" car with 2 extra doors, is actually shorter. I know they want the coupes to be "sleeker" and have longer body lines, but just weird how they seem to make it right proportionally by making the coupe longer.

Odd thought for the day.

E90's are wider and E92's are longer. You are right, the coupes are longer to look sleeker.

Sedans are designed for functionality & carrying extra people in comfort. Coupes are designed for looks over extra passengers, requiring good visual proportions

I love coupes and think the 335's are sweet, especially when they're dropped. That engine and turbos? Well that goes without saying. But, I'm a daddy and tote my boys all over the place and my Sedan works out great. It's not a 335, but possesses great potential cosmetically at least. That said, I kind of get the best of both worlds in terms of having a family. I can haul everybody around and still look great!

Keep in mind, what really counts is the wheelbase and the location of the heavy objects in relation to the wheels (relative center of gravity). I see both cars having the same wheelbase of 108.7 inches. I suspect they have the same track too (distance between the center of the wheels assuming the same wheels and tires are used). This indicates to me that any difference in dimensions may be rather superficial. BMW can easily tack on a few inches here or there with body styling or plastic, but that really doesn't necessarily change the car or its handling. Now if there is actual substantial objects like bumpers or frame members which are placed further out on one model and not on the other, then I am wrong. I don't know anything about the height of the cars, there might be a non-cosmetic difference here other than the number of doors and the location of the B Pillar.

Most coupes do. Japanese or German cars their coupes are usually heavier partially for structural rigidity purposes..

That being said, convertibles are the most overweight of them all.

I get they do it for the looks...

but I wonder if it has anything to do with any type of performance?

I do agree with the above poster above that mentioned wheelbase, etc.

And yes the sedan is built more for practicality, and the coupe more sporty. But common sense and logic would say, the same car built in the both 2 doors and 4 doors, that the 2 door would be "smaller" or "shorter"...

I get they do it for the sleekness and proportions, but they could have also Shorten other areas up, to make them work with a shorter 2 door, but instead they went the other way and increased the size.

Just kind of a funny observation.

Sedans also have 50/50 weight distribution and coupe is 49/51 if i remember correctly. Granted, that is miniscule, but interesting nonetheless.

it's like 2 inches or something. it's mostly just the styling around the front and rear bumpers. the coupes may be a bit longer, but the wheelbase is still the same size, so the driving dynamics are about the same (as long as both cars are fitted with the same suspension & wheel package).

Pretty sure its about 2" and that space is between the front and back seats putting the back seats further back giving the passengers in the back more legroom. I fit in the back of coupe but it is super uncomfortable in sedans.(I'm a tall person)
