Made the mistake of driving an N55 today...
I took my E90 N52 in today for some warranty work today. I ended up getting a 2013 X3 xdrive35i with the N55. This thing is quick! I feel like I'm going to be said every time I get back into my 328. The turbo spool, exhaust note, and BOV sound are awesome in comparison. It's definitely faster than my 328. The boost comes on crazy fast and when it does it GOES. The new 8 speed transmission is pretty awesome. It's just as fast as DCT from 2nd gear on. The downshifts are extremely smooth too. I'm really regretting not getting a 335...

Compared to a 328 it is. Most of us don't spend much time in exotics... Tuned 335s run <12s 1/4s. That's fast anyway you slice it.

I started out looking for a 328i. I test drove 3 328's 6-speed/manual, and when I got to my next appointment for a test drive, the Dealer said they loaned out the 328 4sale, but had a 2011 CPO 335i (N55) E92 6-speed instead, if I were interested for a test drive. I said sure, why not. Well that was that. I never looked at another 328 again. When you drive them back to back, it's hard to pick the 328 over the 335. Unfortunately they wanted too much $ for that black 335 coupe, and wouldn't come down much, so I spent another 6-7 weeks looking, until I found another CPO 335i at a very reasonable price (after a lot of negotiating) with less miles. The acceleration of the 335 at WOT and the sound it makes was much more exhilerating to me than the 328. I have to remember to thank the Dealer for loaning out that 328 and asking me test drive a 335 I spent 4 to 5 more grand $ than I set out to (for a 328), but it was well worth it.

Why not search for a 335i at a reasonable price from either private party or dealership then sell the 328i privately or trade it in to lower out of pocket cost.

Yeah, because you don't want a car with 4 CATS and 2 turbos, and neither did BMW. They were able to cut exhaust production costs by more than 1/2 with the N55, while charging the customer even more for it. And with the F3x, they were able to even use one muffler.

I've driven N54s/N55s and yeah they haul ass, but I own an N51, and it is still pretty quick off the line(xDrive anyways).
IMO the N51> N52. N52 just does not feel quick at all (I owned one for 2 years). And without the xDrive I'm not so sure I would have picked the 328... I don't even have to put it in DS to launch like a roller coaster from a stand still. Just smash WOT. so to sum it up: N51+xDrive= but not quite the feeling of the N54/N55s |

It's pretty said when the 328 can only spin 225's from a power brake launch or when it's wet. The only fast point of the car is from 70-90 then it just creeps up after that.
