My sunroof exploded

Ive read about this numerous times and couldn't fully comprehend until it happened to me. I was driving down the highway with all the windows up doing about 110km/h when a gunshot like sound rang out right above my head. After a second I immediately thought of the horror stories i had read in previous years and sure enough when I slid back my visor glass started to pour out.

Having read about this a few years ago I assumed that BMW would have some kind of recall in place by now. I contacted BMW Canada and the guy told me that if I am out of warranty there is nothing BMW Canada can do. Am I crazy for thinking this should be treated as a recall like the fuel pumps and my odometer reading shouldn't have any bearing on my sunroof exploding????

He then told me I should get my sunroof inspected by a BMW dealership and then bring that evaluation back to BMW Canada, why do I have the feeling that they're just going to say "a rock must have hit it". I called the BMW dealership closest to my home "BMW Toronto" ( don't want to drive in wet conditions without sunroof) and the service rep told me the soonest they could look at my car would be on January 10th. It seems who ever I talk to has no solution.

The pictures I took immediately after show that the edges of the sunroof are clearly pointed toward the sky and that negates the possibility of any type of external impact.

I am going to go to the dealer today anyway and see what happens, any other suggestions???

Thanks in advance

You can clearly see the remaining glass pointing upwards, it blew from the inside out, not a rock or any debris

That is just plain scary. This is the exact thing I always have on the back of my mind when I have the visor opened.

I cannot believe they have not issued some type of recall for this. There have been way too many of these not to!

It's not even just BMW's - if you search, lots of cars seem to do it.

I did call BMW Canada, they told me to go to a dealer and get it inspected, the dealer said they're too busy and wont be able to look at it until January 10th at the soonest. No matter who I call, they just give me the run around.

I have been in the army for 8 years (infantry) so I am very familiar wit the gunshots/ explosions/ ordinance noise. The explosion sounded exactly like a gun shot right beside my head and had I not been acclimatized to these sounds my reaction on the road could have been bad. This IS a safety issue.

Anybody have the number for the BMW ombudsman?

Has this happened to an E90 yet? Only ones I have seen have been on E92s.

This happens in many makes of cars. There is a thread on it on the Honda Ody forum. I still stand by my original theory on the cause (search the numerous threads started here on the topic).

I dont believe this is a BMW-specific problem.. more of a tempered glass problem.

I remember a HUGE thread on this, with several links to other car websites - Honda, MB, Nissan, Subaru, etc... with cars having the exact same problem.

It is not due to impact, more the glass just failing it seems.

Wow, I've never heard of sunroofs actually blowing out like this. Anyone have a link to probable causes for this anomaly? Geezus, that's nuts!
