Gas smell when tank is full
About 3 or 4 weeks ago I filled my car up and parked it in the garage for the night. When I went out in the morning the garage smelled strongly of gasoline fumes. I specifically could smell it strongly around the filler. I replaced the gas cap thinking that the seal on the old one was worn. Needless to say it has not helped. I cannot see any signs of leaks, it does not smell inside the car and there is no smell after I burn 2-3 gallons of gas. I know there is a vent tube and a seal around the filler neck going into the tank. I plan on taking a really close look tomorrow to see if I can find anything but thought I would check and see if anyone has any experience with this problem so I can get a head start. For background my car is an 06 330i with 185,000 miles (yep seriously). Any help is appreciated.

Just venturing a wild guess, maybe an EVAP issue? As innocent as it sounds, I recall a thread where someone was quoted $1800 by the dealership to fix it on a 325i. I remember because I had the same issue on my Nissan and was a bit outraged that they charged $400 to fix it, although the fix has lasted over 200k so I can no longer complain.....

Pull out the lower seat cushion (it just snaps in) and remove the 2 covers allowing access to the fuel pump and regulator assemblies. Check to see if the top of either assembly is cracked.

Thanks for all of the replies. I will take a look under the seat and see that the top of the tank looks like. Mike 3000, I have no codes so that probably narrows that down a little. I will report back my findings.

Does it happen every time you fill up? Wild guess here, but if there was just a tiny bit of overspil in the rubber cup around the cap that hasn't evaporated by the time you got home? The diesel pumps do that all the time here, focring me to wipe it off with the windshield squeegee, some water and towels but I've had it happen in my e30 as well with premium fuel pumps.

Did you find out what the problem is? I'm curious now... I'm pretty confident it's injectors pop open your hood take off the covers and turn on your car rev it a little then turn it off go back and flash a bright light on your injectors and see if you see gasoline. Is your car still under cpo warranty?

It is not the injectors closely inspected them all and the smell is totally isolated to the rear left of the car by the tank with no smell at all in the engine compartment.
