New M3/M4 sound

Is it me or does this new M3/M4 sound like some "Chaved up Banger"?

What does p*ss me off is that it will perform as good if not better than the M5 in a straight line.

Yep It will and round the bends, I will be keeping my M5 for two years (I Hope) but will be test driving the new M3/M4 when they come out.

I know this has been covered but i would expect the M3/4 to 'muller' the M5 round a track....its so light, but i would have hoped the M5 would have the legs on it on the straight.

Surely BMW know this sort of outcome will only p*ss loyal owners off. I do except that the M5 has a superior cabin (if you dig deep) but the M3 in particular is way to close to the M5.

Unfortunately mercedes and Audi have "Moved the game on" and BMW must up there game this M3/M4 should start the ball rolling ( at the expense of us in the M5 which has slipped IMO), we will have to wait a year or two with the M5 to see where BMW go from here.
Look at "Alpina", it's as quick as the new M3/M4 even before they come out.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Undoubtedly the new m3 will be awesome and faster. But I won't be swapping for it. Will wait for the new m5 which should adopt all the weight saving tech and hopefully have a AWD option.

Hard to judge exhaust notes by videos. For me I will wait to hear it in person before I make any kind of conclusion.

Wonder what makes you say this. Stock M5s have been laying down mid-high 3s to 60 and high 11s in the quarter trapping at 125+ and getting 60-130 in mid 8s. Chances are very low that the new M3 will beat these numbers.

This.

And as I have stated before, I have beaten highly modified 1///M's in my highly modified E60 M5 and my not so highly modified F10 M5 in the straight line from 0-60 and in a rolling race. The 1///M's I have raced were close to 500 crank hp and weighed less than 3,200lbs.

And as I have stated before also, on the track the M3 and M4 will be much faster than the M5/M6 in the turns.

In the end, lighter cars are much more fun to drive on a track where as heavier cars with high horsepower and high torque are much more fun to drive on the highway.

Also the M4/M3 will NOT have an optional Bang & Olufsen Stereo System. That matters a lot to some people.

I hear what your saying.....hopefully once rolling the torque will show them both a clean pair of heels.

To each their own but I personally could not care less if the M3 or M4 is faster around the track than my M5. I doubt it will be that much faster in a straight but even then, it would not trouble me because IMO these are cars for very different audiences.

I got the M5 because it is stately, handsome, and is an amazing way to blissfully consume long and short drives. It is big enough to seat 4 comfortably and has lots of storage for the rare occasions that I need either.

It is understated and only people in the know, particularly in my debadged variant, really know how special it is (or that it can blow the doors off of almost anything else on the road). An M5 and a M3/4 go zooming down the highway at the same speed, which stands out more to the CHP?

I thought about waiting until the M4 was out but realized that I would not get one at this point in my life.

1 - M3s are unbelievably common out here, whereas I see M5s or M6s only about as often as I see Aston Martins (which is not often). Hard to imagine that the same will not be true this generation.

2 - I'm 39 and I think I've already passed the M3/4 stage in my life . . . I probably should have had it a few cars ago when I had the S4 Cab, but the S4 was my DD in Boston and I needed AWD.

3 - I already have a fun, more direct car to fool around in.

Lastly, I hope to take the M5 to the track a few times but who knows if I ever will. Based on the Chris Harris and other videos I've seen, it will be a lot of fun. I'm sure the M3/4 will be a lot more tossable and, maybe, even more fun . . . but in different ways.

Pretty sure you can't go wrong w/either car, just depends on what you're in to.

M4 will not even compare to the M5 in a straight line. You'd have to be a fool otherwise. Ive also had some experience with some lighter cars. I raced a 500Awhp evo when I was stock, which I think weighs somewhere close to 3300 pounds. I was pulling about a car length each time over 110. Was the E92 M3 faster then the E60 M5? No. Sound wise it also won't compare. Your comparing apples and oranges.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that too. The E92 M3 was not faster than an E60 M5. Good point!

The M3 has always beaten the M5 on the track. I doubt the M3 will beat the M5 in a straight line. It'll be very close.

I've got a holding deposit on an M4 (which I will rebadge M3) and I think its going to be the best M3 ever.

It won't even be close from a roll . The M5 will trap 4mph faster at least . Yes 0-60 will be a drivers race DCT vs DCT . The M4 will shine on the track not in a straight line .

Only problem is that it'll sound like a "chaved up banger" -

What does that mean anyway? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I don't think so. The video probably was using a poor microphone. It will sound like a twin-turbo inline 6 - i.e. like the 335is
