AdBlue (DEF) Fillups from the pump?

Just purchased a 328d. Yes, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF, a water/urea mixture often called AdBlue) comes free from BMW during the first 48k/4 years. After that, I guess we're on our own. DEF is expensive from BMW and Mercedes, very expensive.

Most truck stops dispense DEF from a pump, and it's CHEAP. Like $2.86/gallon cheap (compared to ~$40/gallon from the dealers). Just wondering if anyone has tried to fill their car from a DEF pump? At this price, I'm tempted to just top up DEF, and not hassle with the dealers, etc (except when the car is otherwise in for regular service).

Thoughts?

Well that's interesting, I will have to check with my brother (the Trucker) to see if it is also available here in Canada. Thanks for the heads up...

You can also buy 2.5 gallon jugs cheaply at autozone, advance auto parts, etc. Buy one 1/2 gallon BMW jug that has the filler connection. But off the bottom when done and use it as a funnel for the 2.5 gallon jugs. Another cheap option.

But I'd be real interested in the truck stop option.

Here's another - http://deutschland.air1.info/de/adbl...g/default.aspx

Select your country from the upper left drop down. I get my DEF from Volkswagon dealers...less expensive than BMW.

Is all DEF the same? I guess that's the question. But would VW and BMW DEF be of the same quality and "type" (if there are different types)?

All DEF is the same. The BMW manual specifies BMW DEF (so that the dealer can charge more), or the AUS 32 standard - which is what everyone else uses. Note that AdBlue is a trademarked name that people have to pay to use, but it's the same stuff.
