Aftermarket pads for M-Performance brakes

are here. Last week I sent Porterfield a NIB rear pad and they made a custom pad for me (us). The issue has always been the rears as the front's are the 335 setup. I'm not sure if the rear set is on their website yet, but AP 1656 R4-S $129.95 are what you want. They were made from a brand new pad, so the thickness will be spot on.

After installing on Friday I went down to Sebring and did 2 days (4 hours track time) with them on F/R. I have to say they did excellent. I did Sebring back in Oct with the OE setup and they were toast after about 15 minutes into the session. Same story at another track too. These clearly made a significant difference.

A few notes..

- I used their race compound on the fronts at Road Atlanta and it was way too much for street tires. However, if you are running r comp you'll probably want to use their track compound. The street compound was good on the track, but they bit just enough. I was running PSS's 235's square.

- My understanding is Porterfield can make pads using any compound you want. i.e. Hawk, PFC, etc Obviously the price will depend on how much blanks costs from the other manufacturers.

- Run the same compound on all 4 corners. I ran their street pads on the front with OE on the rear for a while and the bias was way off.

- The pads hardly dust and I haven't had any squealing.

- I have a NIB set of rear pads lol. I will sell for $50 (retail $100).

Good news - thanks Ronin!

I have the M Sport brake option on my 335, so as I understand it, the pads will be the same, right?

So what's a good low-dust pad for the front M-Perf brakes?

You'll need to double check the rotor size of m-perf vs 335. If they are the front p/ n is ap 1609.

Rears i reference above are 100% different

These will fit the 370mm M-Perf front brakes? I read on their site that they are low dust which is all I'm looking for.

Do you think it will feel too much out of wack if I just change the front and keep the rear pads stock?

When I say M Sport brakes, I mean the optional upgrade, not stock M Sport 335 brakes... I'd guess that the pads for M Perf would be the same as M Sport (since the calipers/rotors are the identical except for the dimples in the rotors and the color of the caliper covers).

Yes, minus the rears, which are completely different.

It's hard to explain. It seemed the car dove more rather than stopped laterally. I could immediately tell something was up because the front tires were much louder during even moderate braking. i.e. no more load than using stock pads. Under extreme braking it almost felt as if the car wanted to rotate.

That said, you aren't going to die if you just do the fronts. In fact, if you are uncertain just buy the fronts and see what you think. There's no science behind my observations. Just my butt.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm mainly concerned with the fronts because they dust the worst. But lower dust on the rear wont hurt I guess.

I was doing some searching and landed at the link below. Wonder if these are an option for the M Perf brakes?

Maybe, but I'd definitely get clarification. There is a lot of confusion between M-sport and M-performance.

The optional M Sport brake upgrade gives you the same Brembo rotors and calipers - both front and rear - as the M Performance brake hardware (except for the lack of dimples in the rotors, and the blue caliper cover color). The M-Sport brake upgrade is a new factory option (in the US at least) for 2014 models.

I just got this response from Porterfield:
The AP 1609 will fit the M Sport Package with the 4piston front and 340mm rotors. I do not have confirmation as yet that it will fit the M Performance Package with the 370mm rotors.

And this response from Powerstop:
Thank you for your interest in Powerstop. My name is Ishmael and I will be happy to help you. Unfortunately, we do not have parts available for your vehicle yet. We should shortly.

They're a little old school. sales@porterfield.com . I think they have a PDF online that lists all their fitments...though I'm not sure the accuracy as there was some confusion over M-Sport vs M-performance. That was months ago though.

Hmm, I don't recall there being a (370-340)/2 mm gap, though I can check. I think I have some pictures lying around in my outbox. I'll double check tonight.

Well that definitely doesn't add clarity to the situation lol. So on the road you have..

< 2014
M-Sports with basically standard brakes
M-Sports with M-Performance brakes

> 2014
M-Sports with basically standard brakes
M-Sports with M-Sport brake option (same as M-Performance)
M-Sport with retrofitted M-Performance brakes

Not to mention the difference between 328 and 335's.

Yup, but I think the 328 brakes with MSport or MPerf brakes are the same as the 335

Yep. Although, I doubt we'll see many 2014+ 335s with retrofitted M Performance brakes now that there is the $650 M Sport option that gets you basically the same kit from the factory.

Hmm, so this is odd. I have two sets of 1609 pads. One is the street compound the other is the track. The track compound was a little short. Probably for 340mm rotors based on eyeball. However, the street compound pads are definitely for 370mm. I just looked and there's no sign of rust on the contact surface area of the rotor.

Attached is a pic of the race compound pad installed. I'm assuming this is for the 340mm rotor.
