335i totaled
Hello everyone
I never got around to posting this since I have been super busy, but here is what happened. I got my 2013 335i msport in January of 2013. I was extremely excited to get my first BMW and loved every aspect of the car. Unfortunately, I had no idea that it would be destroyed on Thanksgiving in a car fire through no fault of my own. On Thanksgiving my friend and I had been driving back from a local pizza joint to my house. We were driving in a spirited fashion, but nothing reckless. He had a 2011 Evo X with 30,000 miles. Anyways after we get to my house he parked his car directly behind mine. We went inside and 3 minutes later a neighbor driving by (thank god) saw the fire and furiously knocked on our door telling us one of our cars were on fire. I ran outside to see flames popping up through the Evo's hood. I quickly grabbed the hose and started hosing it down, and after a minute or two I realized this was not working. My friend was on the phone with the fire department and they told me to stop immediately and get away from the car. I listened and watched the flames in the Evo slowly grow. After about 5 minutes, I could see the flames jumping onto the back of my 335i, which eventually caught fire. By the time the fire department had arrived, the whole rear of my car was on fire and his car was basically fully engulfed. They put the fire out and then I could see the true extent of the damage caused to my car. This was the worst Thanksgiving I have ever had. My insurance had to cover it since it was "an act of god" and he was not negligent. I ended up losing out on a big deductible which I am trying to earn back through Mitsubishi NA. My friend was extremely lucky he did not go back to his house and park his car in the garage, as his house would've burnt down. Had the firefighters shown up 5 minutes later, my house would've caught on fire as well. The firefighters blamed the turbos as the source of the fire. The turbos had fallen off and settled at the bottom of the engine bay. I used to think Evos were great cars, but after this experience I am quite happy Mitsubishi is having trouble staying afloat. This story has a good ending however. On December 15th, I went back to Crevier BMW and was ready to buy a new 335i msport. However, I saw the 4 series and said why not, it would be boring to get the same car. I bought the 4 series and love it every bit as much as the 3 Anyways enough with the story, here are some pictures I have of the event and aftermath.

That first pic is insane! The last, sexy.
The ordeal aside, how does the 4 drive compared to the 3?

I am impressed with the 4 series, however the 3 felt faster. The 4 seems much more planted through the corners as the center of gravity is lower. However my 3 had the DHP and I liked the VSS. The 3 also felt more torquey for some reason. On the test drive I asked my CA why this was and he told me they reduced the torque for the 4 because of the materials used in the chassis (who knows if this holds any validity). I also test drove the 335 msport right before test driving the 435 msport for comparison. Overall though the look of the 4 in person is much more striking and I have no regrets.

Dude, obviously you are lying. We can clearly see your reckless exhaust mod spitting fire balls, which eventually jumped on to your friends evo, leading to its demise. I rest my case.
Sorry about both of your cars, but this is an awesome shot! . |

I'd assume that if he was financed through BMWFS, insurance covered the estimated street value and GAP covered the rest. How much do I win if I'm correct?

Holy moly. I had a Turbo Eclipse that I loved. I used to let it idle down for 30 seconds before shutting it off. Probably wouldn't have made a difference with your buddy's car from what you described.

I was in disbelief the whole time watching it go up. After it was all over though I was just happy we weren't in the car.

Wow! That's crazy, the turbo actually fell off and caused the fire. What a POS! Thankfully no one was hurt! And what a pretty 4.

I presumed as much, but my question was what was the 'street value' that they came up with. Did the car take a big depreciation hit ($10k or so)?
