Please help...P1553, P1639, P1417, P1632 codes
Hi All,
Hope someone can shed some more light on these codes. I've searched high and dry and all I know for sure is that I have to replace the vanos solenoids for P1553. I'll do that when it gets a little warmer here. What I don't know is which one of these codes is causing the car to go into limp mode. P1632 and P1639 have something to do with the throttle being stuck? How is that since the car is still driveable, although in limp mode. Also, I plan on doing this work myself to save some $$$. Vanos are easy, is there a DIY somewhere for the other codes, or what causes them? It's been brutally cold here lately so not sure if that has anything to do with it. If so, then it sucks that I cannot drive this car in the winter without wondering when I'm going to be stranded somewhere. Thanks! |

Yep, Vanos solenoids is really easy! Are you going to replace or try cleaning and swapping around first?
I did a cursory google search on those codes and it seems like a throttle position sensor issue - maybe a faulty throttle body?? Would be awesome if there was someone with another car like yours near you that one could swap throttle bodies around to see if this solves this at least. Then you know for sure that it's your car's throttle body. Hopefully some more advice from others will follow! |

I will most likely replace both of them just for the fact that they will be new.
The car drives perfect in the summer so I have a feeling this will all go away once it warms up. But this all needs to be fixed because there's always next winter... |

Short of replacing the entire throttle body, is there any other part that controls the throttle? Apparently our throttle body's are secondary?
I plan on replacing the eccentric shaft sensor for the valvetronic system but does this have anything to do with throttle? Do I just clean the throttle body? |

Our engines use both the throttle body and Valvetronic system to control the engine breathing and as such throttle. As far as I understand, this is by throttle body opening (but not quite as it does in the traditional sense) along with the variable lift from the Valvetronic motor regulating how much the valves open.
