Winter Rubber

Blew my front tire (Nokian Hakka Rsi - now discontinued). I was hoping to get the balance of the year out of those, but alas, time for some new rubber. They were pretty well worn anyways (I had them since I got the car in '08), and performance was well degraded this year, so this was coming either way.

Went with the Hakka R2s. I'll have them on today (good timing, eh?), and will post a report.

Anyone else running Nokian on their ride? I've driven a bunch of other options, and nothing compares for a true performance snow.

i'm running hakka 7's. 2 seasons on them so far. studded.
no problems what so ever. only time my car gets stuck is if I run over so much packed snow and my car is too low. other than that, i'm stopping and going with 0 issues. Even in that horrible blizzard we had last year, I was driving through unplowed 8-10" snow on cambridge streets no problem. I just kinda plow into parking spots. haven't needed to shovel myself out yet

Studded in Boston? Awesome.

How's that ride? I'd be afraid it'd be unbearable.

I loved my Rsi's, and by all accounts, these are a major cold/dry improvement, so I'm pretty pumped, particularly given what's going on outside right now.

Where did you get them from and how much were they?

A few years ago I wanted to get some Nokian WR G2 tires, but sold the car before needing a new set or tires.

I guess these have now been replaced with the WR A3, which seems to be the new ultra-high perf winter option.

I am currently running Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D tires (225/45R17) on my RWD 335i... they have about 8/32" left and are ok but nothing spectacular in the snow.

Those are my next winter tires. If anyone knows about the winter weather it is the Fins.

I wonder how long they last though...like most winter tires after 1/2 the tread is gone is just a all season in terms of winter performance.

I worry that the 'crystals' only last for a winter...two tops. I usually get 3-4 winters out of 'regular' snow tires before they are worn down by half and basically just all seasons. But that is when you sell them on CL.

Not sure, but I would not worry too much about the "crystals". Unless they are stupid engineers, these would be uniformly dispersed throughout the entire tread depth. So they would continue to the be eroded/lost and new ones exposed as the tread wears down.

The crystals probably are only useful on really hard-pack snow or ice, but if they help some with tire wear that is useful too.

Don't know how to Compare the ride as I'm lowered on coils and I ride on stretched 19s on the summer. I had a BMW tech take my car for a test drive and he said it doesn't drive any worse than run flats.
Compared to the 19s they are definitely comfortable lol. The only issue would be the noise if it's warmer out but it's not an issue with the windows up.

I had the Dunlop 3d tires on before getting these. Sold them when I got a good deal on these as I was going to be driving the car to snowboard. They were night and day.

I ran my Hakka Rsis since i bought the car in early 08. So I got pretty good life out of them.

As Iunderstand it, the crystals are embedded all the way through the compound, so they shouldn't be temporary.
