Can you check the oil filter before draining oil? (N55 top filter)

I understand the stupidness of this question but I just want to be sure because I just went to the parts shop and the guy told me that because of a mix up there are 3 possible filters that might be the one I need. And since I'm taking the car home to do this they cant tell which I need so I took the most common one.

My question is because I know on this motor the filter sits on top of the engine. I was just wondering if it's possible to remove the filter to check the part number/size before I drain the oil. There is no way for me to tell if I have the right filter and if it's wrong I need to make sure I have another car handy to drive back.
