Cleaning S55 intake valves?
Has anyone considered what it will take to blast the intake valves clean? Now that the M3 and M4 have gone direct injection, one of the cons is dirty intake valves. Doing a search on the 3 series forum there are numerous posts with valves cleaned using walnut media. I have over 124K miles and prefer to perform my own preventative maintenance and fluid changes. How difficult will this be? Something to consider.....

I just had this done to my 135i yesterday. My car has 54K miles and was running fine, but I have to say that it feels like a brand new car now. It was $600 + tax.

It's something that may be good to do every 50-100k miles most likely. Probably cost $400-500 on average. No big deal.
Bear in mind it's impacted by oil and oil condition, and the n54 (and other) engines tended to have longer oil intervals. Oil that is not in as good condition (i.e. at the end of it's life) is more likely to coke on intake valves. It does happen on all vehicles though, just at different rates of accumulation. My wife's 08 535xit with 97k miles on it runs fine and has never been cleaned. |

Fuel doesn't touch the intake valves on DI as it is directly injected into the cumbustion chamber.. So better gas and detergents won't work here unfortunately.

And after the particualte filters have been introduced the tail pipe on diesel BMW's are squeaky clean (I had a E60 520D and the tailpipe was so clean that I could run my finger inside it and not see any detectable deposits...). And, my current DI petrol BMW doesn't have black oil or black tail pipes at all... |

to be technically more correct, its not exactly a DI problem.
its a problem in DI engines with just DI. Toyota and Porsche use a hybrid injection process that has both port injection and DI that has been shown to completely eliminate any carbon buildup issues. still not sure why this has not permeated into other manufacturers products Its called d4s
