Window tints in California, how has your experience been so far?

To those who have tints on their cars, please provide the levels you have and what your experience has been so far with the cops if any. I had to get tints as I have some kind of weird chemo-sensitivity issue to sunlight and also have a letter from my doctor but I heard even that isn't accepted if I get pulled over, but some say it's ultimately up to the cop who pulls me over, depending on whether he's in a good mood or not.

I have 15% rear wind-shield and windows, and 20% front driver and passenger windows.

Ive ran tints on my past two cars and about to get some on the f30. Ive had tints for the past 7 or 8 years and they were pretty dark anywhere from 5-15%. Not to mention they were usually on flashy cars. I have been pulled over for tints twice and only ticketed once. Both times were by CHP. Although, i may just be lucky considering I know other people who get pulled over a lot more than I have.

Only twice in 7 years is pretty good. I'm really hoping the doctor's letter I have will deter any ticketing or fines.

The only problem is you can't really see my face from the outside, so that's what might cause problems and get me pulled over.

20% on back
35% on sides

No issues as I'm told this is as dark as you can "legally" go in CA.

I think its a hit and miss with these police offiers/CHP. Some have nothing to do and will ticket you. some don't care. My sister has an E90 and has 5% in the rears and 30% in the fronts. She has gotten pulled over twice. Luckily they know a police officer to write it off without having to remove them. They also drive a 2003 toyota Sequoira that has front tints. Got pulled over for that too. My sister drives 2009 C250 with 30% all around for almost 3 years now and has not been pulled over yea. Just got my wifes F30 tinted with 30% all around as well. So only time will tell.

35% all around on this car and my last 2. So in the last 10 years, I've never had a problem.

I have 35% all around as well and think it's okay. Would've preferred 20% next time I guess

I'm told the tinted windshield is what raises the 5-0's red flag/lights. Keep that clear and you should be OK.

Good Link. If it's correct, it nixes your medical exemption.

I dunno about you guys, but 90% of the time here in CA my windows are gonna be down. Also, if i manage to see a cop ahead or near me i automatically roll down my windows.

I have 20% all around and it is the perfect tint. I had it on my '11 VW CC which had 35 fr 20 rear and I got a fix it ticket in the parking lot of my school.

Garage List
I had 15% all around on my older f30 and I stopped next to, in front of, behind of, drove past by, driven past by cops and patrols and they never gave me a second glance. I live in Rancho Cucamonga and driven to LA and OC a lot. No ticket. Just do not give them any other reason to look at your car (i.e. make sure you are situationally aware of your surrounding and constantly looking for cops).

35% all around on all of my cars, no issues.

No front plate on the other hand has gotten me two fix-it tickets.

This - it really is subjective and depends how bored the cop is. Police in larger cities seem to be more forgiving as they have more important things to worry about than a luxury car with too-dark tint.

I've never been hassled for my front tint being too dark - all of my cars run 30-35% in the front. The sole exception is a Volvo 850R wagon I had that came with 5% tint installed on the front windows by its previous owner, for which I was pulled over and issued a non-correctable violation with a $100 fine instead of the standard $25 fix-it ticket. At least I got to keep the tints on?

I have no reflectors or front license plate... don't want one other thing I could get pulled over for. Plus I don't care for the EBII with tint, looks a little weird to me.

I searched some tint law info related to Chicago recently and came across that site and itīs not that accurate. I found some pretty old info there about sth which has already been changed so I recommend to check out this site.
