Lock/Unlock Confirmation Settings
I just took delivery on a 2008 328xi coupe. When setting the car up, I noticed that the only options for Lock and Unlock Confirmation are lights or off. In the manual, it lists additional options for audible confirmation and lights + audible confirmation. Anyone else see this?
I like the audible confirmation but there doesn't appear to be a way to set this up. FYI, its got comfort access, heated seats, and the dealer installed ipod interface. |

i think hearing the doors lock is "audible" enough for me
just kidding. i havent looked into that those other features. but once the lights all turn off, that's reassurance for me. if for some reason i'm really iffy, i just look inside to see if the doors are locked or unlock and relock again.

you need to have the alarm installed to get the "audible" confirmation. i asked my dealer about this.

yup -- alarm needs to be installed. I was wracking my brain trying to find out how to turn on the "audible" function. The light flash + sound of the car locking is enough for me

Hold down the trunk release button for several seconds. If it takes off wailing, you have the dealer installed alarm. (This is the "panic button" function.) If it doesn't, you don't. There is no factory installed alarm. Without the dealer installed alarm, there is no audible "chirp" confirmation of door locking/unlocking with the fob.

Not only do you need the OEM alarm installed for the audible sound, but you also need the software update...for an additional cost at the dealer (approx $100)!!
I've installed the alarm w/o the software update and the only hint that the alarm is armed is the blinking clown nose on the rear view mirror

I called around to different dealerships in the area and got quotes anywhere from $100 to $300. It's essentially all labor cost. I guess it takes some techs to over an hour to hook your car up to a machine? I don't know....

You're mistaking a security system for an alarm. The security system is standard meaning that our cars can't be driven away without being put on a flat bed. An alarm is just a noise producing device to piss off your neighbors at 3am when it goes off for no reason. As said before, the alarm is a dealer installed, extra cost option. If you didn't pay for it, I doubt that you have it.

If BMW didn't feel the need to include an alarm as standard equipment, that's OK with me. If the car gets stolen....isn't that what I'm paying insurance for?

The only use I have for the OEM is the sound confirmation of lock/unlock. It is a bit pricey to get it but I missed it at first on my E91. Theredore I got it installed and I plan to get in on the upcoming 335i before I take delivery.

i highly doubt an alarm system came standard from the factory on those cars but i could be wrong. i've never heard of a car coming standard with an alarm system.

Count me in. I had a 20+k maxima with a factory alarm, my lexus, etc. How in the world we pay 45+k for a car and they don't include a $200 alarm is beyond me and rediculous. I would have payed the extra too if the dealer would have told me! I thought that since the red clown nose is on my car there was a reason? So it is for looks unless you get the alarm that doesn't come standard on your car and your dealer doesn't tell you about. Why is it there on our stock cars!?

You guys and your "45K for a car and it doesn't come with XXX" just kill me. Did you buy a car for its beauty and performance or for the little doodads you think you should get because you're a big man with an expensive car.
45K for a car and it didn't come with a dick warmer. Boohoo. |
