Dyno Run E90 330D - oh...and hello!

Having run two M3 CSL's I changed to an E46 330D in July.

The lads at Superchips in Buckingham did a fine job in tweaking the car into something that was still interesting to drive after the CSL's but was a bit less obvious when in a hurry

Trouble was, the car had no spec and, after a load of thinking and a lot of financial pain (I'm used to it with BMW ) I decided to order an E90 Touring to the spec that I wanted rather than take a stock car and always wish I had this option or that spec.

Wait was finally over a couple of weeks ago now and today we got the car on the dyno:

Original BHP: 220
Now: 264

Original Torque: 368 lbft
Now: 463 lbft

I'll upload the graphs if I get near a scanner before Xmas but I'm sure they will be on the Superchips website before too long anyway!

The difference is really noticeable and if it's anything like my E46 the car should be more economical too. The only downside that I can see at the moment is that the 6-speed auto doesn't seem as quick in "manual" mode as the old 5-speed. In Sport mode, however, it's better than the E46 so maybe I should just leave it there.

As an aside can anyone tell me how the sliding centre armrest works?

I have the sliding centre armrest in my 330d, basically it is split in half and the drivers side half can be moved backwards and forwards by a few inches. Otheriwse I believe it is the same as the standard armrest.

As for the performance improvement, Wow! I'll have a look at the Superchips site, I only live a few minutes form Buckingham. What does your insurance company think of the modification?

I've seen that split armrest in a photo posted somewhere on this website.

There was also a split armrest in an Infiniti FX-35 that I rented a year or two ago.

Thanks for the split armrest info - I have that option but can't for the life of me work out how it slides! Is there a catch or button to release my side? All I seem to do is open the console lid....

I know that chipping cars is often thought a bit of a poor substitute for "proper" tuning methods but I've dealt with Superchips for nearly 20 years now (!) and never had a problem. I've always liked their approach which doesn't put much emphasis on bar stool figures, just whether the driveability has improved.

The performance is absolutely seamless with an instant wall of torque.

Put into context this is now a 3-Series with more torque than any production Aston, Ferrari or Porsche including the Carrera GT

As to the performance figures Ed_330i - standing 1/4 is not a UK thing really with 0-60 being the benchmark. I'd say that mine is probably between 5 and 6 secs to 60 but that's not where the car shines. Where it is truly special, is ambling along at 40mph - a gap opens up, hit the throttle and the car just takes off. I've driven lots of very quick cars but never anything that is so instant in its response while remaining so cultured!

Do you have a digital camera? If yes, you could take a photo of it and then upload that for the mean while.

Just read this in BMW Car magazine about the E90 330d

"In comparison to the 330i the 330d is a tad slower to 62mph... but the 330d's flexibility simply knocks spots off the 330i - 50-75mph is a whole second and a half faster in the 330d. An E90 330d is as quick as an E46 M3 CSL over that 50-75mph segment!"

That's some impressive #'s!

I'll scan the review of the 330d and post it sometime tonight/tomorrow.
