Speeding . . .
Got caught by these laser speed gun things today, probably going to be my first ever 3points but hopefully get a driving awareness course. anyone aware of the thresholds etc? internet isn't very clear on this just thought someone may have some experience of this.
Expecting to get bashed here but here goes, 59mph in a 40mph zone. If anyone is familiar with it its the flyover in Birmingham that leads to Handsworth and City Centre. Pretty much everyone goes quicker then this they had like 9 cars pulled to the side. Police are pretty sneaky man, i preferred speed cameras. |

Think you'll have to swallow 3 points for that, highly unlikely a speed awareness course will be offered for 19mph over the limit.
That's just my opinion of course and I could be wrong, I hope I am

No chance of a speed awareness course... If you are within 5mph of the limit its usually offered. In some very rare cases if your within 10mph then it can be offered.
Good luck and let us know the outcome.

I've known people get the course with similar amounts over, especially if it's first offence, they're pushing the education thing at the moment. It's a worthwhile course tbh too.

ah mate ur scaring me lol! hopefully being a first time offender will help me out a bit and the fact that there were so many people being pulled over at the same time and place. Its one of those roads that 40mph just seems like a joke, no1 really sticks to that but I'm sure i will from now

Mate i really hope i don't get 6 for it being first time offender, that would be pretty crazy. 6points is a lot for that right ? Im pretty shocked though at least with a speed cam u knew it was coming but i kinda feel police should at least have some sort of sign warning of speed check area ahead. They jus stand around on street corners holding a laser making easy money

That sounds promising, i hope i get let off. The officer did say that also, i asked him what the likelihood of points is and he goes there emphasis is on education rather then points but it would be a central team making that decision. The course probably would make me drive more sensible as i assume they show u some pretty bad accidents etc right?

A friend of mine had a celica gt 4 well over 500bhp and he got caught racing an m3 both drivers got away with doing one of these courses and they were doing over 100mph on a 70mph A road, but ive had a friend also get caught doing 37mph in a 30mph zone and get 3 points.
I also got caught doing 61mph on a bit of road that changes from 70mph to 50mph so i was slowing down, the old bill were sitting behind a tree followed me home and took details etc, anyways nearly a year had passed and i got a letter saying it was to late to charge me etc and its been cleared. Just the luck of the draw i suppose but hopefuly you get off lightly

59 in 40? And speedo more likely said 62/3... Moron.
No course, as you are in the 56-65 bracket (41-55, 56-65, 66-75) and looking at 5 points (4 if you're REALLY lucky) or 7-28 day ban plus fine. Lucky it wasn't 66; that's a 7-56 day ban OR 6 points if you have a good reason not to be banned... Fine value = your weekly income less 30% if you plead guilty at first opportunity. More than 30% over , I'd be very suprised if you get a course offered.
As a point of reference, I got done for doing 78 in a temporary 50 and got 6 points and £600 fine.

When I got a course (84 in a 70) there was a letter that explained that the threshold for the National Speed Awareness Course was worked out at Limit + 10% + 9mph. So in the 70 where I was the threshold was 70 + 7 + 9 so below 86 mph it was a course. In your case (and West Midlands Police are members of the National Course) the limit would be 40 + 4 + 9 = 53 mph. In other words, no chance of a course. You will get 3 points and £100 fine.

No! If you knew what they have to deal with as the result of "inappropriate driving" I suspect you'd have some respect for our traffic Police.
Greed cameras have no discretion as they are administered by pen pushers primarily interested in revenue generation (if the locations of mobile camera sites in my county are to be believed). 20 mph over the speed limit isn't acceptable in either case so as you already know you've only got yourself to blame |

Some limits are a bit odd, 50 through our little village on a A road, with kids crossing, a T junction and no lighting, and then 40 on massive urban barriered dual carriagways - work that out?
OP, so they actually stopped you? This changes thing a bit. What papers did he give you? a fixed penalty notice or what? If he is "reporting you for consideration of the offence etc etc" then that means you're going to court AFAIK and it could be up to 6 months before you get a summons. ACPO upper limits for courses are +10% +9mph, so 53 in a 40, but forces set their own limits below these figures often.
