iDrive functionality question

Hey guys,

I am hoping one of you with more experience with iDrive can help me out here. I haven't been able to connect my iPhone 5 to the car via the USB-Lightening connector since I got the car.

I have attached the way it shows up under "External sources" in iDrive - as you can see, it looks as though the Aux jack is in use, but it obviously isn't. The "USB" option always appears to be greyed out when I open this menu, which is weird, because the phone charges when I have it plugged in - it just doesn't recognize the iTunes ???

Am I being thick somehow ??

I don't know much about this since I don't have the car yet, but could the "Enhanced USB and Bluetooth" that comes with the Tech Package be necessary?

Doesn't make sense to me that the car wouldn't recognize it without the package, but just a thought...

try powering the phone down completely, wait 1-2 minutes, then power the phone back up. execute the entire sequence with the phone plugged into the usb & the engine running.

When I first tested my iPhone 5s with the y-cable from my 135 I had the same problem. Then we tried a standard apple USB cable and it worked. I can't remember if we used a lightning cable or an older USB to 30 pin with the lightning adapter. The m235 model I tested only had the cdn prem. Pkg.

I had thought of that too - I tried turning it off AND a hard reset. No such luck...the car obviously "knows" the phone is there, because it is charging it via the USB. Just not recognizing anything else...

It sucks because I have used my phone for music for a while now...I am not sure how to function otherwise...

I might try and find a 4s or 4 with the old cable and see if there is an issue with the older version as well - I even tried a colleague's phone with her lightening cable on her 5s and there was no dice there either...

Try an older 30 pin cable with the lightning adapter. Fairly certain that was what worked for me.

I just tried the 30 pin to lightening adapter that belongs to one of my buddies, plus the y cable that came with the car - and that finally worked.

Now I gotta go buy one....sigh...$30!

You should also try plugging the phone in before starting the car if you haven't already. Honestly can't remember if that was the fix on my mom's 328 or another family car, but worth a shot.

Picked mine up today. Plugged in iPhone 5 iOS 7.1 with Apple USB to lightning cable and all worked. Have the uk Nav professional and that also provides Bluetooth audio.

Do you have the BMW Apps? I was told by my USA dealer that the update for lightning cable and BMW Apps hasn't be released yet, but they are expecting it very soon. I have USB music through the cable only currently on my iPod iTouch 5th Gen working.

I ask my dealer about the snap in for the 2 series and he told me it wasn't available yet, at least with the vin of my car.

As a workaround until you figure out the cable issue try using the Bluetooth streaming to access your iTunes music.

So not matter what I tried, I could not get the standard lightening - USB cable to work.

I bought the 30 - lightening adapter, plugged it into the BMW cord, and now I'm good to go, it works as the lightening cable did by itself in the 135.

Sucks that I had to spend $30, but at least it's good to go now.

Well I used two different ones, but they were the identical cord. Never thought of trying that....

Thanks for running this thread. I bought a new iPod iTouch 5th Gen instead of a used iPhone 4 and didn't have much luck the first night using the supplied lightning cable either. A few days later I updated my iPod to the latest IOS version and BAM! I have all the ConnectedDrive Apps working! Heck, even M Lap Timer is working too, it shows G forces and records.

The following Apps are now playing through my iPod and BMW:

Standard BMW Apps (News, WebRadio, Wiki, etc.)
Pandora
TuneIn
Amazon Music
M Lap Timer

So cool to have these all working now!
