Question 320d LCI zoomed past my 320i pre-LCI - how?

I was going about 40 then hit the gas by using "kickdown" but this 320d really zoomed past, I decided to go into sports mode by shifting into S as well as kickdown but the 320d was just too fast! How come? It's diesel and probably manual so shifted into 3rd?

320d mapped = 220bhp +

Nowhere near quick but fast enough to laugh off a 320i...

The standard 320D is quicker than the 320i, everyone knows this.

Your car - http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/review...on-2005/32027/

Probably their car - http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/review...on-2005/38237/

Basically 177bhp + 350NM > 147bhp + 200NM

Why do diesels have more torque? Why can't petrols have more? Would a 325i beat a 320d in the same scenario? Thanks for your replies I understand now but I used kickdown AND shifted into sports mode. Most people would just use one to overtake, get a sudden rush of power? I could have gone into M3 too?

No my 320d pulls on my mates lci 325i after maybe 80 mph it might catch up and overtake as the 3.0l engine will have the legs to carry it through

The 177 320d has faster times 50-70 in 5th. and 6th. than the 325i.
