Takes your breath away!!

Darling admits 25m records lost

The chancellor urged people to monitor their bank accounts

Alistair Darling
Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing.
The Child Benefit data on them includes name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and, where relevant, bank details of 25m people.

Chancellor Alistair Darling said there was no evidence the data had fallen into criminal hands - but urged people to monitor their bank accounts.

The Conservatives described the incident as a "catastrophic" failure.

In an emergency statement to MPs, Mr Darling apologised for what he described as an "extremely serious failure on the part of HMRC to protect sensitive personal data entrusted to it in breach of its own guidelines".

And the government want to implement ID cards.

Why bother with the middle man (HM Govt),we might as well email all our bank details and sensitive info direct:

Mindboggling!

I find it amazing in this day and age of technology that the govt. use TNT internal mail to transfer 2 cds that aren't encrypted that have all that detail on - what planet are the government living on?

Utterly unforgivable IMHO. It just simply shouldn't happen. I'm affected by this (not that I have any money in my bank account) and wonder what sort of frigging incompetents are supposed to be administering and governing us. Morons. Never mind the chairman of HMRC resigning, he and the idiot responsible should be prosecuted for gross negligence.

In fear of incriminating myself, I know for a fact that 'lesser' government departments like the one I work in, actually have better computer systems and associated security measures. The information I have access to is of a sensitive nature but not on the scale of todays announced balls up. Can't say any more than that I'm afraid.

Gordon - you've sussed me...damm. Anyhow I may be transferring departments soon if Hotcoupe becomes minister for roads (see my motorway speed limits thread). Not sure if it would be a sideways move & up or sideways move & down though

If I remember correctly when those asswits at Nationwide lost a laptop with all of their customer's account details on it they had a hefty fine and criminal charges.

Now there is little point in imposing a fine on a govt department (take the money out of the left pocket and put it back in the right) but I would like to see Darling in the Belmarshfor a while. I bet he would be the 'darling' of the morning shower call ........

Matt, that is alot of money to you & I, but do you think that 'hurt' Nationwide in real terms. Surprisingly many people are still using them as a mortgage lender supported by the amount I see at work.

Evil is right, you can't fine a government department as such, just make scape goats. We receive internal e mails from London about security issues for our department and it is very tight. I struggle with how the discs were sent from HMRC to NAO, this is normally done by couriers employed by the department(s). All very strange.

Are you suggesting that the boss should fill the PA's Xmas stockings? As we know Father Christmas only comes once a year
