Upgrade stock speakers
Has anyone upgraded the stock speakers yet?
If so, what did you get and how expensive was it? Thanks for the information in advance. |

From what I understand, the door has a 3 way speaker in it. So there are three speaker behind the grill including a tweeter,

You mean a coax speaker? Never even heard of a 3-way coax 4" speaker.
Pretty sure it's like the rest of the non-HK vehicles. Same speaker locations, but different speakers being used and no center channel speakers. (Edit: take that back... I don't see a speaker location for the tweeter on the A pillar... what a disappointment, as I can't even leave out the HK option and upgrade without having to deal with subpar speaker locations... the base system probably doesn't even have underseat subs?) I have a pair of the very last Diamond Audio Hex S400 components that I might try to fit into the factory locations and get a pair of replacement underseat subwoofers, but most likely all that would require an external amp since the Hex speakers are 4 Ohm and the original speakers are 2 Ohm, which means the Hex will be getting even less power and are probably less efficient than the stock speakers. Just took of the door panels to see what was really there. The door has one 4 inch paper speaker no tweeter. Quite different than the 3 way speakers I was told. No wonder why the sound is so bad.
The rear deck speakers are also 4 inch speakers. |

+1 on the grills - are those available through any BMW parts store?

Do you know if the wiring for the tweeters in the Apillars is Hot (live)? Would it be as easy as just getting a set of 1 series Apillar speakers and installing them?

No wiring in the a pillar for tweeter. The tweeter wire comes on the tweeter, then you need to buy the hk mid which has an in and an out plug, one for sound in, one for tweeter out.
In the process of fitting mine but the little blue two pin connectors are a PITA. Can't work out how to disconnect the speakers without breaking the connectors |

Ok, I was looking for photos to see if it would be easy enough to get a component system speaker in the door and separate the mid in the door and the tweeter in the triangle above. Wondering if there is enough space for the crossover box.
thanks
