Hitting the Redline in 1st

I'm not a professional driver, although my M Coupe has encouraged me to start taking driving classes and will probably lead to me building/buying a BMW race car in the near future. That being said, I was just wondering how many of you S-54 drivers hit the red line on occasion? My problem is in 1st gear. I have never red lined it in any other gear except 1st.

You know what happens, you keep pushing until you feel the engine lose power and you realize you are in the red. . . shit! Then I feel guilty all the way home, with thoughts of a couple of BMW mechanics at the dealer standing around my MC in a post mortem session muttering "he shouldn't have red lined it in first, what an amateur." Am I overreacting?

That is the rev limiter you are hitting. The engine is being protected by electronics at that point, so you are really not doing much, if any damage.

Relax .. enjoy the ride ... besides . you car came with a warranty, right?

It's fine just make sure you shift at redline. If your relfexes are not very good then try shifting at 7600-7700 and you should be fine.

Bouncing the needle every now and then shouldn't hurt, especially an M. I haven't done the research but you might want to explore shift-lights.

I was thinking about the very same thing. My brother has a Ford Mustang muscle car (I always laugh at how small the brakes are) and his dash lights up like a Christmas tree when he gets near the red line. I'm going to the track next weekend and will sak my mechanic about it.

BTW, all you guys that responded are from SoCal. My Mechanic is John Handal at European Motor Works in Arcadia. This guy knows it all. Go to his site EMW1.com. He give you the straight scoop on whatever you need to know Re: BMW.

Off topic, but MTheory, are you going to the Speedventures event at California Speedway? I'm heading there too myself on Sunday the 2nd. I'll be driving my Suby Legacy though, still breaking in my new M coupe.

I'll be there. I'm trailering in my MC and dropping it off at my mechanic (European Motor Works / emw1.com) on Friday. On Saturday he's installing a UUC short shifter and a SS exhaust setup with powerloop mufflers and x-pipe . . . while I hover around the shop asking "and what does that thing do?"

I'll be at the track on Sunday. I signed up for 4 x 20 in the MC. I'm dropping my wife and kids off at that hell hole called Disneyland, so it should be an all BMW weekend for me.

I look forward to meeting you. I'll be the one in the XXL helmet.

Cool, look forward to meeting you too!!! I may just stop by at European Motor Works on Saturday to check out the work that will be done to your car. I live about 10 minutes from Arcadia. Do you know what time you are going to be there from?

I'm also signed up for 4x20 min sessions. Really wish I can take my new M coupe there, but I've only got 400 miles on it right now...

You are doing the right thing. It was torture for me during those first 1200 miles. Play it safe and follow the break in. John at EMW says that the break in is not so much because of the engine, but because of the new transmission. If anything were to go wrong as the result of an abusive break in period, it would probably be in the gears.

I will be at EMW all day from at least 10 AM. I think you will really enjoy speaking with John. He really knows his stuff and is very honest in his opinions about modifying the MC. He recommends to leave the engine alone. According to him, the only two mods which will make a difference are the exhaust and suspension. Any engine mods will be at the expense of reliability.

Hope to see you at the shop. Bring your MC.

Too bad, I would like to check out your MC. You have some mods I'd be interested in. I'll be at European Motor Works in Arcadia on Dec 1, drop by if you have time after drifting. Don't know about any car show, though.

I guess this question is directed to me. The simple answer is: I'm an inexperienced poster. If one of the site directors would like to move it, that would be great.
