Very interesting. On paper the M5 has less power, less torque and more weight than the Vauxhall yet it just runs away from it. Just a smidge underrated no?

Its called American hp coupled with a proper 6 speed manual transmission.

With the American hp, well those yanks typically have optimistic dyno and quarter mile readings (Aussies tend to just follow the blue printed numbers). The last time HSV upped the GTS power levels over and above the top dog Corvette (in 2000), the yanks got all hot and bothered.

A six speed manual transmission will find it harder to be in the correct powerband as a seven speed dual clutch.

It would be good to have HSV make another track focused beast, but with the way thins are going, HSV wont even have a Holden to modify.

Sadly the VXR8 wont be long in this world.

Wow! All these years i thought my BMW was German not American. I feel a bit foolish now.

The VXR engine is American. From a Corvette but also supercharged. Not a fair matchup, me thinks.

Tests in Australia so far has shown that the automatic 6sp HSV GTS (aka VXR8) performs far better than its manual counterpart, in both straight line and twisty. Dont ask me why, but pretty much all tests have shown this.

For me fun factor = Manual > DSG > auto
But performance wise = DSG > auto > manual

Sad to say, but I think that auto has finally leaped over manual transmission, even with a skilled driver at the helm.
