Ever wondered why...

... it is that forums get loads and loads of spam links posted into them (just like e90post at the moment)?

This should explain it: http://www.eweek.com/prestitial/0,,,...22961%2C00.asp

Thanks. Good read. Although the porn links are a more direct way of catching their target without high google rankings

I've been bombarded with fake registrations on one Forum I run, all using .cn e-mails/Links, although originating from zombie IPs. Getting endemic.

Although I have a variety of steps in place to prevent full registration (and even placing of links in spurious unactivated registrations), and also steps to prevent subsequent flooding of spam posts.

Bit of a war.

This wasn't happening before the off topic forum was established.

I've got a hunch that the Spam Bot just selects the smallest (Main) or largest index number (=newest =UK OT) as it scans for which forum to post in.

Soon as another Forum section is created ... I bet these posts decrease here.

Close to 100% could be stopped before they are posted, by an add-on for VBulletin. I've used that before, any posts with links (posted while the user has less than X previous posts) will be flagged and only visible to Mods. If it is legit, just authorise that post. If not, log the user, check IPs with previous attempts/users and e-mails and ban. Cut down our spambot posts to zero. In fact, I developed spidey-sense and could delete them as they were registering ...

Dave,

If your user base has been hit by malware as a result of all this, I can probably sort you out with an affiliate membership for our malware scanner, Prevx CSI, in return for a link on your site etc. Let me know if you're interested?

(PS this wasn't my intention for the original post!)
