What are the rules for a Spare Tire

As the title says, what are the rules for a spare tire. I'm thinking I need to get one after a couple unfortunate incidents. In my mind, I'm thinking as long as the bolt pattern is right and the overall diameter is the same, it should be fine? What about the width? Since I'm staggered, as long as I get a width that's similar or smaller than the fronts, can I use the spare for front and rear? I feel like the spares that is sold for our cars are pretty overpriced for what it is. Can definitely get rims and tire together for cheaper. Any insight would be appreciated.

Pretty much any wheel & tire combo from another E9x (other than M3) will work fine. Any diameter 17/18/19 should be fine as long as the overall diameter is correct. Don't forget that the hub size and offset need to be correct (or close.)
