Hi gents,

I'm moving to a different state for school for one year, do I need to change my car registration, license plate, driver license, etc?

I'm leasing the car from BMWFS, do I need to tell them that I'll be moving to a new state for a year?

I do understand that I need to tell my insurance company that the car is going to be parked at a different address/state, hence paying different premium.

Yes, yes and yes unless you have residence in both states at the same time. I have seen some people move and not change them for a couple years but if you get caught good luck.

Years ago, my car was registered in Oregon, but I was a full-time student in Pennsylvania.
At the time, students did not need to change the registration.
Once I started working then I changed it.

I don't think you need to do any of that. While I was a student in another state, I didn't need to register my car or change my state driver's license; I also did not need to re-register to vote as I did not change residence (I continued to vote in my home state). It wasn't until I graduated and got a job (in that same state) that I needed to do all of that. You should check with the DMV or DOL to make sure, though.

As a student you should be fine. If you change your driver's license though, you may have to register the car in the new state, so don't do this. Policies vary state to state regarding registration, but you really won't be subject to them. As for insurance, speak to your agent to make sure they cover you. I suspect they do without any changes to your policy. And finally BMWFS doesn't care where you live as long as you keep the car in the US (AFAIK).

Thanks everyone! Looks like I should be fine as a student. I will definitely change them once I graduate and get a job. The reason I don't wanna do all these is that I don't know where I'm gonna end up when I graduate.

Don't change it you'll be fine. And god forbid you're going from a monthly use tax state to a place like IL. I did that and had to change, had to write a huge check to cover the difference in taxes.

If you had stated your question correctly I would have answered different. You said you were "moving to another state". If you do not keep a permanent residence in your previous state like your parents or a house or apartment then you moved. I've moved to 7 different states and they all require you to get a new DL, registration etc. WV, Ohio, Ky, SC, NC, CT and FLA which I have lived in. Again, are you totally moving or going to college, when I went to college my parents kept a residence in WV and I went to college in Ohio so I never changed anything. If you have no ties to your previous state with a residence then you moved whether your moved for 1 year or 10 years. It comes down to the address on your drivers license, if you don't have any connection to that address anymore than you need a new DL and registration.

I think it is still important for the OP to check the state DMV laws. In California for instance, if you're a student 24 years or older, you are required to register the car in California.

I did. Looks like they require out-of-state students to register with the Police Department where the school is located and obtain a decal to place on the windshield.
