All RE050 Run Flat USERS
I would just like to bring to the attention for everyone using Bridgestone RE050 Run Flat tyres, Please check your tyres for crack along the inside edge, I had mine up the ramp Thursday and noticed a crack a damn big crack, having just had the tyres removed I wanted to keep them to inspect the damage myself, these are only 8 months old and have covered 5k miles 6.5mm remaining so perfectly legal and (SAFE) in eyes of the laws.
I have checked my dads tyres aswell and there exactly the same 18" rather than my 19" I wanted to see how safe they were and poked a pair of blunt scissors into crack and long behold they went straight through without any force at all, so close to blowing out on the road so it seems glad I caught it in time! Just with the weight of me on 60kg You can see where it had been wearing away on the inside getting thinner PLEASE CHECK YOURS!!!

Lucky you never had a blow out.
Something is really wrong there though. We're the tyres ever used when flat? My original Bridgestone tyres wore very heavily on the inner edge. No tyre has done the same since. |

You'll get nowhere with the manufacturer they'll blame the car.
Not arguing with you mate but I work with these cars every working day and I don't see this a lot and it's generally cased by running flat/ soft , the rear alignment is way off, or the cars been driven hard or on a track. |

I had something very similar on RE050 RF fronts on my 335i (225/45/17) the crack was not visible on the outside but when we took them off the car to replace them (they were legal but down to 3mm) both tyres had split, between the sidewall and the tread footprint, the guys in the tyre shop said theyd never seen anything like it!
Scary to think a few days before I'd been flying along at very high speed a blow out would have been a disaster. |

Wow that's about as bad a tyre issue as I've seen in a long time we see plenty with chords showing but this is a different ball game. As you say you were driving at some speed not long ago beg genres belief really what the outcome if that would of been had it kept go.
But looking at the tyre I see a couple of things. If you look on the inside of the tyre you notice the mark which I've circled You may find an examination of the tyre could draw a wheel alignment issue(rears aren't that easy to correct on these cars) or under inflation issue(though you say you're a regular pressure checker) as I also noticed that the inner tread blocks were scrubbed quite badly for a tyre of such age/mileage(feathered)and again would perhaps be bought up for discussion, I've known tyre to be sent back to the manufacturer, who supplied you the tyre? As you're local to me most tyre depots in Herts/Beds purchase direct from Stapletons in Letchworth and if you had an issue and wanted the tyre inspected your supplying tyre depot could arrange for the tyre to be collected/inspected but I've got another thing worth trying test I've put below. I've known tyres being inspected a few times, usually due to a customer feedback/complaint, the reports are very thorough but they very rarely point the finger at the tyre()usually it's a geometry/inflation issue they crops up that causes a tyre to exhibit the symptoms shown.. Thing is the rears on these cars do scrub I've seen some bad ones but never ones that exhibit the wear you've encountered. The rear set up on these cars isn't as you may know fully adjustable again though OEM equipment thus may come up in conversation if it's within spec though and you could supply data to this effect (Tyre Pro's Letchworth)have the latest Hunters Machine then you might have a case also worth noting is the fact that Tyre Pro's are owned by Stapletons and they may well be able to give you a heads up,re the tyre but only show them after the cars been through the geometry check over as you need to have the cards at that stage stacked in your favour. Worth looking in to it though |

That's a good write up bud lots of good points, I do also make a habit of having my tracking checked every 6 weeks due to the poor quality of the roads that's at my mates tyre pros garage on a hunter machine, I forgot to say these were the front tyres that's had the problem

Gotta say I changed my run flats as I heard so many horror stories about damaged tyres and wheels.
Since changing to standard tyres the ride quality is much better and slightly soft...worth consideration. Whilst I appreciate that the idea of run flats is a good safety feature, I think that the manufacturers need to bring them on a stage further to stop these type of issues which go directly against the safety features they are trying to promote. Cost of the darn things is another point for another day!! |
