HPDE with 8AT

I am new to the High Performance Driver Education. I want to know if I should just let the 8AT in my 2013 335i xDrive handle the shifts or should I do anything with the shift lever? My car is stock, no paddle shifters.

If you are brand new to the track just put it in manual mode and leave it in one gear, say 4th (depending on the track). You need to concentrate more on what's going on outside the car than what's going on inside the car. Even with manual/smg equipped cars I always recommend new students get a lay of the land first then worry about shifting. When you finally hit the top of 3rd, 4th or 5th gear then you need to start worrying about shifting. In the mean time, concentrate on your braking, turn-in, apex, exits which are far more important. If you don't get those down your gear selection won't matter much because you just can't add speed to the equation.

Move the shifter over to be in "DS" then leave it alone so you can worry about the other stuff

Agreed. The sport 8AT is excellent on the track in manual/paddle shift mode, but until you learn the ropes (both the line of the track, and the basics of car control), it's much better to leave it in auto. One less thing to focus on when getting started is helpful. Once you start relaxing a bit and become aware of more things around you (noticing what each flagger is doing for example), that's a good sign that you're ready to take on more to do in the car.
As for leaving it in 4th, that is good advice for new 5/6MT guys, but 8ATs are really close ratio, so leaving it in one gear would be very limiting.
