Blackstone Test-Mobil 1 ESP M 5w-40

So I finally got around to sending up my oil to the Blackstone oil test guys, here are their results.

I noticed the oil viscosity was wrong on the PDF. Not sure if that really skews the results, or if it mattered.

I've used blackstone on my TDI and confirmed that the 10K factory suggest change interval was ok.

I'm glad to know that the BMW OCI based on CBS is ok as well. I guess I'll stop changing the oil at 7K now. My CBS OCI is around 13K.. which is ok based on your blackstone report.

Thanks for sharing.

As an added data point, that's kind of the consensus that a bunch of buys came to in a similar thread over on another forum (about a year ago - not raining on any parades here, data is good): http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=475850
Many posters here over there, too btw.

Looks good.
How come you are using Mobil instead of oil from BMW? Thought BMW uses Castrol?

BMW has a contract with Castrol which is soon coming to an end. Many people feel there are superior oils out there in comparison to the Castrol.

I switched to Mobil 1 ESP M after reading the Blackstone test off bimmerfest/forums, plus I just personally like Mobil 1 over Castrol.

My CBS starts as 13k but I usually change it within the last 2000miles.

Ah ok.

Just a note: BMW has a document that with a list of "Approved Oils". If the oil you are using is not on that list, if something were to happen to the motor, they can deny CPO Warranty coverage.

His results may be completely different than yours, I still change at every 5k, change the oil yourself, it's cheap that way...

Yeah, it is possible. However, I did many Blackstone UOA on my TDI and my results matched other TDI owners experience.

I feel confident that between BMW's CBS, the large 8 quart capacity and this blackstone report, I can safely "extend" my interval to BMWs CBS recommendation with no bad effects to the engine.

Since I do my own oil changes, it really isn't a cost thing. Besides, the first "mid interval" oil change I did at 7500 miles was the most important in my book. I now have 27K on my D and it has had four oil changes- 2 by me and 2 by the dealer.

Now the fuel filter- that is a different story. I wish that I had known about 2/3 dispute earlier. I would have changed the filter at 20K like I do on my TDI- right now the CBS has me going to 35K on the original oil filter. Uggh.

I also follow the CBS interval. Never had an issue on any of my BMWs.
I also follow the Flex Service schedule on my Mercedes, roughly 9-10k oil change intervals. Been doing this for the last 110k miles with no issues.

I used to do the 5k interval in the past, but its just a waste of good oil. Its not about the cost of the oil change, but the fact that good oil is being thrown away for no reason.

You can use this link to check the oil life for a particular vechile, assuming you are using the recommended oil.
