Considering New Tires...which ones?

So I'm considering new tires for the (07 sedan, sport package) BMW...since I currently have a mismatched set on there (bought it less than a week ago), with some off brand fronts, and Bridgestone re050 RFT's on the rear (decent tread). Here are what I'm thinking as possible choices, in no particular order:

-Bridgestone s-04 pole position
-Nitto Invo
-Michelin Pilot Super Sport
-Continental Extremecontact DW

Sizes will be 235/40/18 front, and 265/35/18 rear, mounted on the stock wheels.

Does anyone have first hand experience with any of these? I was originally thinking RS3's, but decided I should go with something rated for a little more miles, since this is my daily driver.

Another option is to buy a set of front re050's (very low treadwear rating though) and just leave on the rears, although, the rear tires are currently narrower than OE, at a 245.

Thoughts?

I have run all but the Contis recently and the PSS are the way to go...probably the best street tire available.

Hankook V12's? If you're considering Invo's, these are in the same price point. I had Invo's, went to V12's on the rear once Invo's wore out. Slightly softer ride, a little less noise. Invo's are nice tires as well, but if it matters, you can't flip them since they are directional and side specific.

Agreed.

If you want something more budget friendly, the Continental ExtremeContact DW is a good alternative, or the new Hankook Ventus V12 evo2.

Also check out the Bridgestone Potenza S04 Pole Position. In some sizes they are an outstanding bang for the buck.

I had those listed in my OP

I think it's between those and the Michelin PSS. I just ask myself "are the Michelins really worth $200 more?"

Your choice would come down to what your needs are.. price, performance, comfort, longevity?

FWIW, I think PSS's are one the best all around tire with awesome dry/wet performance, decent tread wear, strong sidewall, good comfort, and decent price for what they offer. If you want all out performance, you should look into the Bridgestone RE-11's. IMO they offer one of the best performance from street tires.

The RE-11 is a more hardcore tire than the PSS, so I think that's probably a bit much for most people haha. PSS is a good balance of performance and practicality.

The BMW is my daily driver. I'd like a good balance between all aforementioned traits. An all-out performance tire is not what I'm looking for here...I'll save those for the STI.

In that case, choose the S04. It is a slight step down in steering response and dry grip from the PSS, but has a bit softer ride and is indeed more of a "balance of aforementioned traits".

Michelin PSS is definitely the most popular and used tire on these forums. I personally think they are the best tires if you are willing to pay for them.

Depends on what you want, I have 295 PSS and they are good but not great for my needs. I am still spinning a good deal launching and from a 40 roll so going to try RE-11. That being said, if your want a long lasting, comfortable low noise and pretty good grip get PSS. If traction (launching, high hp car) is your main concern look else where (RE-11, NTO5, NT555R or R888). I would say PSS is a great "all around" tire.

I used my PSS in winter with no issue.

I'll be ordering a rear pair of Blizzaks for the winter and running the all-season fronts that came with the car.

Plus I'll have the STI if this winter is anything like last winter here (~50" of snowfall).

You may want to look at the SUMITOMO HTR Z3, IMHO, the best "bang for your buck" tire.

They are on sale now at TIRERACK....

Blizzaks on the rear and all-seasons on the front = VERY unstable handling and loose feeling rear. Avoid this for sure.

Definitely do not mix winter tires and all-seasons like that. You should either pick up a pair of matching all-seasons, or get four winter tires.

When you say Michelin PSS do you mean the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (threadware 300) that costs around $886? Also are those run flats?
