2020 or 2021 X7 M50i, Which Year?

Reading some conflicting posts about the ideal year to get the M50i variant. Is 2020 or 2021 a better idea and why?

2020 had more options(rear seat entertainment, ambient air, etc. And some consider cars built prior to supply chain issues were well built. Some features were deleted in 2921 and early 2022.

Also most 2020’s should be close to end of factory warranty and they should cheaper than 2021s

My 2022 is a bliss, no problems whatsoever, 30k miles in. While options have been deleted in subsequent years, you can still find some equally equipped vehicles in 21 and 22 (I think only ambient air and night vision is truly gone in those years). From a mechanical perspective, there’s no difference between these years.

I would base my decision on what you can find in the market based on mileage and the options you want/need.

Ah ha, definitely don't care about air diffusion or night vision. TV's could be added one day if necessary. Guess I'll keep poking around and see what I find.

2020, imo, is the best x7 year.

If you want to tune(software) your X7, 2020 is your only option.

Ah ha, I coded a ton of stuff on my F15 X5, little quality of life tweaks but I loved the flexibility. What types of things do people change? Or what are some of the more popular mods?

Why is that- I thought it was 23 and above that can’t be coded.

Let’s not confuse coding with tuning. You can tune everything that’s pre-LCI. You can also code everything pre-LCI. You can’t do the same on LCI.

Coding - ie switching off options such as ASS or Anti-Dazzle lights - this is possible on all pre-LCIs
Tuning - ie getting more engine power and torque by “coding” the ECU - this is also possible on all pre-LCIs, albeit in different flavors up until 2020MY and in only 1 flavor up until 2022MY.

I’m overly simplifying here.

You are right. I was over generalizing.

Anti-dazzle reminded me that I should get that done on my beast

One of the best features of the car in my viewpoint, if you do a lot of after dark driving. It really works extremely well with those laser lights!

Nice, my 21' is getting inspected and I'll hopefully be placing a deposit shortly.

Any tips on how to get started with coding once my baby gets here? Would love to unlock the best headlight experience possible and I know US versions get inferior spec'd setups...

You can pretty much tune any pre-LCI or LCI, but the cost for custom tunes is pretty significant. If your X7 is manufactured after, June 2020, the ECU is locked. You'd have to remove your ECU(or purchase another ECU) and send it to some specialized tuning shop to unlock (usually located outside of US).

If your X7 is manufactured before the cut off, tuning it is as easy as driving to a shop that specializes in BMW tunes, and 1-2 hours later, you'd have a 600HP+ and 650TQ+ X7.

For example: This $1000 tune (probably $1100 after taxes and fees) can give you a little power boost.

That sounds excellent! I have a tune on my 14' E550 and now put up pretty similar numbers, glad to know that's an option with these tanks.

If you're before March of 2020, you also have the option of tuning at home: https://g07.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2069394

Seems like most people are getting locked during dealer updates. Is there a simple unlock for N63 yet like the mhd unlock for B58? I'm trying to decide B58 vs N63 and the tuning aspect is kind of important for me
