X7 Driver

Is the X7 geared toward Moms and larger families?

I like large SUVs and have had a Tahoe / Cadillac before, and I am very interested in the x7 M60i. It will not be used as a family hauler since all the kids are out of the house. I will use it to tow my toys to the track and trips down to Florida a couple of times a year.

Does it make sense for my use case?

Sounds like a perfect use case. It's definitely targeted toward families and I do use it take my kids around, but I bought it with the understanding that I didn't want a full size SUV like a Tahoe/Escalade. Instead, I wanted a slightly longer, more luxurious X5 that still retains good driving dynamics and gives me the option to occasionally use the third row. The M60i performance is great and works wonderfully as a cruiser with highway assistant for longer stretches of highway. Of the three row German SUVs, I think it's the best choice.

BMW SUVs are very capable tow vehicles. Get the factory tow package. Don't settle for aftermarket if you're going to tow near capacity.

Look at the distance between where the tow ball will be and the rear wheels. It's a very short distance so there's not a big level arm to wag the SUV if the trailer gets unruly. Plus with the factory package the stability control works to help keep things steady should things get dicey due to wind or an emergency maneuver.

I think there is an added Tran’s cooler with factory hitch as well.

I do not think that the X7 has a particularly strong family car image. While just about every three row SUV will be used for family duty (like the Tahoe you used to drive), I also see a lot of empty nesters and snow birds like yourself using the X7 to haul stuff back and forth and cart their friends around in comfort.

Absolutely makes sense. I find most moms don’t care about performance and drive any large SUV whereas the X7 offers sportiness that most dads (and some moms) can utilize and appreciate😀

In our neighborhood, I would say 80% of the xDrive 40i with minimal options are driven by moms. In hindsight, I should have gotten the M60

I wanted a high performance, true luxury, full size SUV. I didn’t want another full size sedan as they were too small for traveling even for my wife and myself. The X7 is THE one in a very short list of similar vehicles. Think about it, there is a lot of full size SUV’s and there are a lot of luxury/performance SUV’s but not many full size luxury/performance SUV’s made.

Buy it for the driving dynamics. Put the X7 in sport mode and it lowers itself and is ready to party. I hauled butt on the tail of the dragon. A bunch of dual sport motorcycles were having trouble keeping up.

I'm on my 4th X7 now since 2019. You can tow decently with 6cyl too. Depends on your needs. Obviously the V8 is going to be the king when it comes to towing and performance. Just be aware of the start/stop system, which can't be disabled without choosing sport mode or turning off traction control.

As a 28 year old with no kids and a “basic boat”…. I’m in love with the x7. Fun to drive, luxeries of the 7 series(obviously) and I can tow the boat, the dog, and 4 friends with ease. Plus the hatch design is perfect for camping in and tailgate parties at the lake. It’s the only suv that I even thought of getting and I’m happy I finally jumped ship from sedans. But get the v8 it’s worth the extra cost of gas/insurance. I6 is not bad at all… but you’ll always be wanting the v8. I lasted 42 days in the i6 until the millennial FOMO was in high gear… lol

And to note, the captains chairs were a requirement for me. But… if you’re hauling things more often than not, I’d go with the bench. Captains don’t fold flat and they take an eternity to to move out of the way when you haul shit.

I would recommend getting the Space Saver Spare and if you kids are young adults then the aluminium running boards as well. Both together cost $650 from factory but after market take $$$$.

The dap is awesome! I can't buy a bmw without it! All four of my x7's had it and one X5. Much more relaxed driving on the interstate. It's not perfect, but you learn when to intervene, etc.

Unless your short I don't like the running boards. You will hit your leg everytime you get out.

And for me, I like the extra space without the spare. Carry an inflater and some plugs.

I like it for the adaptive cruise control alone. That feature makes long drives much more relaxing, especially when there is a truck race on the interstate (e.g., one truck is going 0.000005mph faster than the one next to it and you're stuck behind the two "professional drivers").

Your build looks awesome. Can you add the space saver spare or is it not an option with the build you have?

Apologies, they do not offer it for the M60i model.

Good choice on the spare saver. Did not have one in my other vehicles, and I went ahead and got one at a steeper price. Cheaper when purchased when ordering the new vehicle.
