Switching from factory 22'' to 21'' wheels and following concerns
I know a lots of posts discussed 22'' wheels and 21'' wheels pro and cons regarding limited tire selection, ride quality etc.
I'm a complete rookie in those. But after reading those posts, I've decided to change my 2023 X7 40i comes with 22" wheels staggered setup to 21" wheels all square, 285/45-21, in some time future. I don't want to switch summer tires and winter tires every year and poor threadlife for P Zero. So I have some silly questions I didn't see posted somewhere before (I guess that prove again I'm so rookie in wheels and tires) 1. Is that really ok to change from 22" wheel to 21" wheel if my vehicle originally came with 22"? Or it not just depends on diameter of wheels but also specs of tires you selected? I saw someone in other post mentioned speedometer and odometer will be off X% because of different Revs/Mile,Radius,Diameter etc. Not sure if different wheel size trigger any drivetrain, electronic issues 2. If it's ok to change to smaller wheel (rims) with all square setup, must I stay with BMW OE tire size which is 285/45-21? How about rims? what specs of 21" rim should I look into 3. What if I switch to 20", which is not factory size and I don't know what rims and tires to choose. 4. Last one and most important one, if I change to different size rim and wheel, say 21", will warranty still cover if anything happened? Really want to find out answers since my first winter is comming and I don't have any winter tires and don't want to put brand new x7 in the garage for the whole winter just because I have summer tires. Thoughts? advices? Thanks!! |

In some other markets, X7 comes standard with 20" wheels and 275/50 R20 tyres. |

1) yes, as long as your overall diameter is about the same. stock sizes are:
21- 285/45/21 22-275/40/22F 315/35/22R 23-275/35/23F 315/30/23R they are all roughly the same diameter. every drop in rim side has aprox a 5% increase in aspect ratio, cancelling out the rim size change with an increase in sidewall height. 2) you should stay as close to stock size as possible. you absolutely want the same diameter (or as close as possible) front to rear if you do a staggered setup. 3) as the other poster noted, 20" is an OEM size in other markets. the only issue you need to be aware of is caliper clearance if you have and M50/M60i or a 40i with Msport brakes. at 20" some designs wont fit or have very little clearance. my snow tire set is 20" but due to the design i have alot of clearance. stock 20" tire sizes are 255/55/20 or 275/50/20. 4) as long as you stick to stock sizes you should be fine.

Further on point #4, every vehicle owner should be aware of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (https://automotiveaftermarket.org/ma...-warranty-act/), and its basic provisions. Dealers and manufacturers cannot void your warranty simply because you sourced parts and/or repairs from someone else. There is of course considerable gray area and "what if" associated with this Act's provisions, especially if you make radical modifications to a vehicle like suspension lifts, over-sized wheels and tires, and perhaps tuners. This is likely one reason some tire shops are reluctant to deviate from OE tire sizes -- they don't want liability for voiding your warranty. But if you stay within the boundaries of sanity -- 20", 21", 22" -- and observe the factors in the post immediately above, there shouldn't be any warranty problem.

In your opinion, for 23 G07, in long term and to save time, $ and efforts, do you recommend to have 21" A/S or 20" A/S as main wheel sets? What wheel specs should I look to if looking for non-OEM? Beacuse I saw some rims had different options for offset value +31mm vs +30mm, does this matter? |

BUMP... I am actually going from 21" factory to 22" factory set up.
Do I need to "reprogram" to 22"? I seemed to recall an option to change tires sizes but that may be winter tire setting? In terms of tire pressure, I was going to follow the manual (35F and 42R) but I am curious if there is way to change the setting in the car to reflect the accurate size tires and corresponding PSI as it does currently for my 21" set up. Update: I was actually thinking about this - changing within the tire setting and I guess you just need to do rear: Thanks Last edited by sbkim; 12-18-2023 at 09:56 AM.. |

it should list all the OEM sizes. if not, theres no real issue, as long as you cold inflate correctly and reset the system. it will learn the setpoint as the baseline and alarm at -25% (or whatever it is now)

For what it's worth, I got about 27k miles out of my DWS06 on my 2016 Cayenne, which weighs about 800lbs less than the X7, and has the same overall tread width. I now have the DWS06+ on the Cayenne, and at about 12k miles they are half worn.

I don't love the style 754 "M" wheels and we didn't want to deal with 22" wheels, so I sold the 754's with runflats and bought style 752 black wheels, found here:
https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...36-36116885461 For tires, we went with Vredestein Quatrac Pro's, which so far have performed great (only 1 month of use though). This was the only tire I could find that came with a high-ish mile warranty and had decent reviews around rain and snow performance. They also have the 3-peak rating which is important to some. So, you get a combo of good mileage claims and good rain/snow performance, which I couldn't find in any other 21" options. |

I currently have the 21’s with non run flats Bridgestones. ‘23 x7 40i luxury trim without sport brakes. Would switching to 20’s improve the ride noticeably? Would 19’s be advisable?

The ride with 21's is just fine. Why go smaller? You can probably go to 20's (BMW sells winter wheels for X7 in this size) but I doubt 19's would clear the brakes.
